The Aqua-Excellence Pool Sani:zer and De-Chlorinator Descrip:on The AE17 is 8”X 23”, weighs 40.5 pounds and treats pools up to 17,000 gallons. The unit comes with a tank head bypass assembly and 1” pipe connec:ons and contain metallic media blends with granular ac:vated carbon that kill bacteria, algae, viruses, break down calcium, which prevents scaling and removes chlorine. The AE40 is 8”X 41 3/8”, weighs 73.5 pounds and treats pools 17,000 to 40,000 gallons. The unit comes with a tank head bypass assembly and 1” pipe connec:ons and contain metallic media blends with granular ac:vated carbon that kill bacteria, algae, viruses, break down calcium, which prevents scaling and removes chlorine. Both units have an interior ¾” riser tube (or flow tube); therefore, pool systems with 1 ½” or 2” pool plumbing will require a bypass of either ¾” or 1 ¼” bypass to maintain the water flow for the pool’s pump flow rate (See bypass assembly for further informa:on). Bypasses are easily assembled of schedule 40 PVC parts found at your local building supply. As the water recirculates, eventually all the pool water is treated. How Does It Work? The process descrip:on will begin at the pool water filter: 1. As the water exits the pool water filter it flows downstream through the return line toward the pool. 2. It will then flow through the Aqua-Excellence Pool Sani:zer and De-Chlorinator, located between the pool filter and the pool. As the water flows through the Aqua- Excellence Pool Sani:zer and De-Chlorinator bacteria, algae, and viruses are killed and chlorine is removed on contact. The addi:onal flow demand will go through easily made bypass plumbing and will eventually circulate through the sani:zer and de- chlorinator. 3. The treated water then con:nues to the jets where the water is placed back into the pool area, free of chlorine and up to 99.999% bacteria killed. 4. T he water is then pulled from the pool area through the skimmer, where it will run over one (1) single 2”-3”chlorine tablet that is placed into the skimmer. The purpose of the chlorine tablet is to oxygenate the dead bacteria so it will catch in the pool filter.
Page 4
The dead bacteria should be removed from the pool system as needed or the water may become cloudy. The dead bacteria are removed by backwashing the sand filter approximately once a week or as needed, and a cartridge type filter should be rinsed as needed Note: the single chlorine tablet should last approximately one week then, when reduced to the size of a half dollar, add another single tablet. Important: Do not use more than one chlorine tablet at a :me as it may greatly affect the PH-level, which may oxidize a copper element in the Aqua-Excellence Pool Sani:zer and De-Chlorinator. The system will not work correctly if PH level is below 6.6 or higher than 8.6. Some older pools may use copper plumbing. In these circumstances, the single chlorine tablet should be placed downstream of the copper plumbing and before (or upstream) of the filter. 5. The recircula:ng process con:nues as the water con:nues back through the Aqua- Excellence Pool Sani:zer and De-Chlorinator where living microorganisms con:nue to be killed and chlorine broken down or removed. The swim area of the pool is fresh water free of chlorine. 6. This process will con:nue as long as the system is running. The system should be allowed to run con:nuously for 12 hours. It is recommended to run the system during the day3me when swim ac3vity is high then stopped overnight, unless removing chlorine shock. NOTE: It is necessary for the wall and floor surface of the pool be maintained by suc:on or pressure type automa:c cleaning units, designed to either immediately pull dirt, debris, algae, etc. into the skimmer or cause it to become adrin, where it will eventually recirculate through the skimmer. Note: if necessary, maybe once a month or so, chlorine shock may be broadcast across the pool aner large storms or heavy swimmer ac:vity or pets, or to kill any algae or mold that may aoach to the wall surface. It is recommended to shock in the evening aner swim ac:vity and allow the pool to run overnight so the De-Chlorina:ng effect will remove the chlorine shock from the pool system. 7. The Aqua-Excellence Pool Sani:zer and De-Chlorinator also helps maintain the pool’s PH level; however, it is recommended for the owner to monitor the PH, keeping it near...
Maintaining the wall and floor surface Now that your pool water is treated through the Aqua-Excellence pool sani:zer you will enjoy swimming in chemical free water. It’s important to understand that since the water no longer has chemicals, measures must be taken to maintain the surface of your pool’s walls and floor. It is necessary to have a cleaning system that will make contact with the interior pool surfaces to remove any microorganisms that may aoach. There are many different types of units designed to do this. They are as follows: Suc:on Type System: This type of system works off the pools exis:ng pump suc:on and uses it to work along the walls and floor; scrubbing the surface and pulling the debris through the suc:on hose directly into either the pool’s skimmer, or into a wall portal, where it travels to the filtra:on mechanism. The retro fit design connects to a cover which fits over skimmer basket. Any larger debris is trapped in the skimmer basket. The water travels over the chlorine tablet, as explained earlier in the manual, then through the pool’s filtra:on unit. On newer pools, the suc:on hose will connect to a dedicated portal on the wall of the pool. Pools that are not covered by a screen enclosure and receive large amounts of organic material should have a high capacity leaf and debris collec:on device, located along the hose or at the equipment set to collect debris prior to entering the pump and filtra:on system. This type of system remains in the pool as the pool system runs and can be removed when swimming. It should be placed in a sunny loca:on, away from algae, mildew, and mold. When swimming ac:vity is over, the system is simply placed back into the pool. Robo:c Systems: Robo:c systems are electronic units that run on tracks that make the unit capable of climbing the walls. Brushes located under the unit scrub the wall surface, removing debris and microorganisms, rou:ng water through aoached filters where algae is caught. Other robo:c systems may simply send microorganisms adrin, where it will be pulled through the skimmer and into the pools filtra:on system where bacteria will be killed. This type of system is occasionally placed in the pool to operate and then remove and stored away; the unit should not be stored in an environment where algae growth would be prone, such as a shaded area. If storing in a storage bin, the unit should be completely dry, allow the unit to set in the sun. This will keep the unit from developing algae. Note: Some owners of this type of system report briefly dipping the system into chlorine water solu:on to kill any bacteria prior to placing the unit in the pool. The Aqua-Excellence sani:zer removes any chlorine residue as the water is naturally treated.
Pressure Systems: This type of system uses the pressure from the pool’s pump to operate the unit. These types of units move along the surface and use water pressure to move debris into a net. It is important that the system have contact to effec:vely work the surface by scrubbing or brushing it to remove bacteria and algae. Systems that roll along on wheels and blow debris into a net DO NOT adequately remove bacteria or algae! PRE-INSTALLATION Prior to installa:on read the owner’s manual and check for local code compliance. Check System Parts First remove the system from its packaging. You should have the following: ✓ 1- Tank with head ✓ 1- Bypass assembly ✓ 1- packet of two (2) plumbing aoachments ✓ 1- Hose connector INSTALL ATTACHMENTS: The installa:on process will be the same for Aqua-Excellence Water Products models: AE-17 and AE-40...

The bypass assembly comes assembled with red arrow flow indicators. The red arrows are to be facing up. The red arrow flow indictor should point toward the “UPFLOW INLET” portal with the second red arrow poin:ng out of the “DOWNWARD FLOW INLET” portal. Push the side with the O-rings into the tank head as shown and hand :ghten. Note: The bypass should have arrows posi:oned as shown with the arrow poin:ng toward the “IN” or “UPFLOW INLET” portal. If the arrows are turned the wrong way, simply pull the arrow straight up off the peg, turn 180 degrees and reaoach by pushing the arrow back onto the peg. Reposi:on the second arrow in the same manner, if necessary.
The 1” PVC elbow assembly comes with O-rings, Split-Rings, and connectors. Easily assemble as directed on packaging. Slide the O-ring ends into the bypass assembly, as shown then hand :ghten only. Note: The gray elbow aoachments turn 360 degrees. Tank Flushing Step 1: Prior to installa:on the tank should be flushed. Flushing the tank is necessary to remove ac:vated carbon-dust residue from the tank. The dust is harmless. Flush the tank in the following manner: A. Place outside onto the driveway, or an area where water flow onto the ground will have runoff. B. Connect the supplied hose connector to the portal marked “DOWNFLOW INLET”. Aoach water hose to the hose connector then turn the water on and flush the tank. Dark gray water will flow from the outlet which is normal. Con:nue flushing the tank for 10 minutes or un:l the water becomes clear. (NOTE: briefly running water into the “DOWNFLOW INLET” to flush the system will not harm the system.) C. Remove the hose connector and aoach it on the portal marked “UPFLOW INLET” and flush for 10 minutes or un:l water becomes clear. D. Turn water off. E. Detach hose from hose connector and leave the connector aoached to the tank. F. Leave the tank full of water. G. Allow tank to set for 24-48 hours. This helps saturate the ac:vated carbon. H. Reconnect hose connector to “DOWNFLOW INLET and flush for 10 minutes or un:l water becomes clear.
I. Connect hose connector to portal marked “UPFLOW INLET” and flush for 10 minutes or un:l water becomes clear. The tank is now ready for installa:on. J. Disconnect the hose from the connector then remove connector from the tank and keep for future use. How do I switch my pool from salt water to fresh water? 1. Connect the Aqua-Excellence Pool Sani:zer and De-Chlorinator to your pool by following the provided pool installa:on process. The salt water will not damage the sanita:on system. 2. It is not recommended to drain your pool as it may cause damage by making it “float” up from the ground. 3. The salt will naturally dissipate over :me by water being introduced because of evapora:on, and rainfall. 4. One op:on to remove salt is to aoach the Aqua-Excellence Pool Sani:zer and De- chlorinator and allow the salt cell to con:nue to run for approximately one (1) week. If this method is used do not place a chlorine tablet in the skimmer as it may introduce too much chlorine along with the salt system salt cell/chlorine generator and too much chlorine may affect the PH level. The salt cell or chlorine generator will con:nue to deplete the salt from the system as it generates chlorine. Aner this one week period, disconnect/detach the salt cell and place a 2”-3” chlorine tablet into the skimmer basket to oxygenate dead bacteria, so it will catch in the filter. Any remaining salt will eventually dissipate. Will My Current Pool Filter Work? The Aqua-Excellence Pool Sani:zer and De-Chlorinator will work with all types of filters. Sand filters are the quickest and easiest as they are simply backwashed approximately once a week. Cartridge filters may allow debris to pass by as the filter is being removed. For this reason, the sanita:on system bypass should be ac:vated just prior to cartridge-filter changes then deac:vated aner flushing the system once the filter housing is assembled. Cartridge type filters may begin to deteriorate aner a year. If the cartridge filter does show signs of deteriora:on, it should be replaced to avoid clogging the sanita:on system.
Installa:on The Aqua-Excellence Pool Sani:zer and De-Chlorinator is easily installed with minimal skills or can be installed by a licensed plumber or pool company. First a bypass system must be aoached to accommodate pool water flow requirements. A bypass can be obtained at your local building supply company then easily constructed and installed. Note: Before installing check for local code requirements. 1. Locate the return line from the filter back to the pool. 2. Locate a space for the sani:zer and de-chlorinator just downstream from the filter. 3. Determine where to make the cut in the return line to place the bypass. The cut will need enough pipe len to securely fit into each end of the bypass tees. 4. The bypass should be constructed according to the exis:ng pool plumbing size. Most pools are either 1 ½ “or 2” Schedule 40 PVC plumbing. Build the bypass: The following are the fivngs needed to construct either size bypass with disconnects: 1 ½” Bypass: 2- 1 ½’X 1 ½” X1” tees 2- 1 ½ “X ¾” reducers 1- ¾” PVC pipe (Cut approximately 5”) 2- 3’ sec:ons of 1” spa hose 2- 1” PVC unions (which screw together)
Page 11
2” Bypass 2- 2” X 2” X 1” tees 2- 2” X 1 ¼ “reducers 1- 1 ¼ “PVC pipe (Cut approximately 5”) 2- 3’ sec:ons of spa hose 2- 1” PVC unions (male and female pieces which screw together)
Page 12
Using the proper method, u:lize primer and cement to connect the PVC parts in the following manner: A. Lay the tees end-to-end with the 1” tee outlet poin:ng the same direc:on. B. Aoach each reducer to the side if the tee facing the other tee. C. Aoach the sec:on of PVC pipe into each reducer. Make certain the 1” outlet of each tee point in the same direc:on. D. TURN POOL OFF. E. Hold this sec:on along the return line to determine where to cut and leave enough pipe surfaces at each cuvng point to properly aoach into each tee. When aoaching the bypass make certain the 1” tee outlets will be facing the direc:on where the sani:zer and de- chlorinator will be posi:oned. F. Aoach each 1” spa hose to the 1” tee outlet. (Note: the spa hose have a curve to it. Aoach to where the curve works toward connec:ng to the system.) G. Separate one 1” PVC assembly (Threaded male & female) and aoach the male end to the end of one spa hose and the female to the end of the second hose. IMPORTANT: Incorrect plumbing installa:on will damage the system! When plumbing permanent placement or using the winterizing disconnect type system, the tee CLOSEST TO THE POOL FILTER SHOULD LEAD TO THE ATTACHMENT ON THE “UPFLOW INLET” SIDE, OR RIGHT SIDE, WHEN FACING BOTH PORTALS OF THE BYPASS. This flow paoern is required for water to enter the “UPFLOW INLET” PORTAL. WARNING! DO NOT CONNECT TO THE PORTAL SIDE OF THE ASSEMBLY WHICH READS “DOWNFLOW INLET” CONNECTING THE PORTALS OTHER THAN AS INSTRUCTED WILL PACK THE MEDIA, and, IF ALLOWED TO RUN INCORRECTLY FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME WILL DAMAGE THE UNIT AND VOID THE WARRANTY. H. Separate the second 1” PVC union and aoach the piece to the gray pipe 90 degree fivng that connects to the “UPFLOW INLET” to the union piece that will mate to the union piece extending from the hose connected to the first, or upstream, tee closest to the pool filter. Then connect the remaining union piece to the gray pipe fivng that leads from the “DOWNFLOW INLET” and connect it to the ma:ng union piece located at the downstream union. The bypass reduc:on will force water to flow through the sani:zer and de-chlorinator in the required flow paoern. J. Disconnect or unscrew union fivngs then connect the fivngs located at the end of each hose to each other to make certain they will connect when the system is winterized. Aoaching the system in this way will keep the unit from being incorrectly aoached in the future.
Winterizing Follow these easy steps to properly remove the system for winteriza:on: 1. Turn off pool. 2. Remove the Aqua-Excellence pool sani:zer and de-chlorinator from the pool system by disconnec:ng the union aoachments from the “UPFLOW INLET” and “DOWNFLOW INLET”. 3. Turn red arrow flow indicators to ac:vate the bypass and keep water from spilling from system. 4. Connect the hose-end union pieces to enclose the pool system. 5. Proceed with normal pool winterizing process. 6. Place the sani:zer and de-chlorina:ng system inside where it will not freeze. WARNING! DO NOT ALLOW TO FREEZE. DAMAGE WILL OCCUR IF THE SYSTEM IS EXPOSED TO FREEZEING TEMPRATURES. STORE SYSTEM FULL OF WATER. DAMAGE WILL OCCUR IF THE WATER IS DRAINED FROM THE SYSTEM FOR LONGTERM STOREAGE.
POOL BUILDERS To prepare the pool for the installa:on of the Aqua-Excellence Sani:zer and De-Chlorinator the pool should be built as a freshwater pool. A chlorinator is not necessary unless copper plumbing will be used downstream from skimmer. Although the system works well with all filters, the sand filter is the easiest system for the customer. Follow installa:on instruc:ons provided in this manual. Allow new pools to “cure” at least 30-45 days prior to running water through the sanita:on system. This allows :me for building material residue and debris to be removed from the system. The sanita:on and de-chlorina:on system should be used once the pool is established a running as a chlorine pool. TROUBLE SHOOTING Problem: My pool water has a greenish hue color. Solu:on: 1- Check to make certain the bypass sevng is not ac:vated. 2- Check the PH level. If the PH level is way is below 6.6 or higher than 8.6 it can cause the copper element in the system to oxidize and give off a greenish :nt or hue to the water. Correct the PH level and allow the system to run un:l water color corrects. 3- Make certain only one (1) chlorine tablet is placed in the skimmer. Using mul:ple tablets will affect the PH Level. 4-Nitrates from fer:lizers will turn the water green with any type of pool system. Make certain water runoff from fer:lized grass, flower beds and pooed plants does not enter the pool. Problem: The pool water appears cloudy. Solu:on: 1- Check to make certain the bypass sevng is not ac:vated. 2- Filter not backwashed or rinsed as needed. 3- This may be an accumula:on of dead bacteria that needs to be removed. Backwash or rinse the pool filter then make certain there is at least one (1) chlorine tablet in the skimmer. 4- Aner large amounts of rain or exposure pets and high swimmer ac:vity it may need a rare treatment of chlorine shock. Shock the pool in the evening or aner swimmer ac:vity and allow the system to run overnight to breakdown chlorine. If you are allergic to chlorine, check for chlorine levels before entering the pool. If there is s:ll presence of chlorine allow the system to run un:l all chlorine is removed. Problem: The pool system seems to have slowed or pressure has increased. Solu:on: 1- Make certain the bypass system is not ac:vated. 2- Backwash or rinse the filter system. 3- The riser tube may have become clogged by debris that passed the cartridge filter. Disconnect the sanita:on system head from the bypass assembly. Connect garden hose to...
Page 15
hose connector then aoach hose connector to the “DOWNFLOW INLET” portal and backflush the system. (NOTE: briefly running water into the “DOWNFLOW INLET” to backflush the system will not harm the system.) Watch for any flushed debris. Re-aoach system. 4- The sanita:on system may have been incorrectly installed with the water flowing into the “DOWNFLOW INLET” portal instead of the correct method of water entering the “UPFLOW INLET”. If the system has ran incorrectly installed for an extended period of :me the system may be damaged. TIPS ✓ Keep all pool toys and equipment, i.e. poles, nets, hoses, etc., in a sunny place where they will thoroughly dry. Keeping them in a shaded place may cause algae/bacteria/ mold or mildew growth which could be introduced into the chemical free pool water. The same applies to enclosed storage bins. ✓ Keep only ONE (1) chlorine tablet in the skimmer un:l it is reduced to half-dollar size then add another tablet oxygenate dead bacteria. ✓ Chlorine tablets can be purchased individually wrapped to avoid chlorine fumes. ✓ Maintain the wall and floor surface with a suc:on or pressure system to dislodge any bacteria that may try to aoach. ✓ Wash all garments worn to a river or lake before wearing them into the pool. This will remove any bacteria. ✓ Monitor and maintain the PH level. The system operates with PH levels of 6.6- 9.0. The system will not perform outside this level. ✓ Although the sanita:on will system will work with all filter types, it’s much easier with a sand-filter which is simply backwashed as needed. ✓ A rare shock treatment may be needed. Shock the pool aner swim ac:vity and allow running overnight or as long to circulate the pool water through the system to de- chlorinate the water. ✓ When transferring your pool from salt to fresh water it is not recommended to empty the pool as it may ‘float’ thereby causing great damage! Salt water will dissipate over :me as fresh water is introduced by rain and refilling due to evapora:on, etc. ✓ Always turn the pool pump off before adjus:ng pool filtra:on and sanita:on equipment.
