  • Page 83: Training Modules

The MEWP VR Simulator is designed to take a trainee through a series of scenarios. Each scenario covers a part of basic operation or a common problem for operators in the f ield. Throughout each scenario, metrics regarding the trainee’s driving, behaviours, and view direction are tracked.
  • Page 84: Boom Lift Worksite

    boom lift Worksite 81 81...
  • Page 85 Drive Forwards This scenario teaches the basic functions of the equipment and controls, as well as the use of the simulator. The trainee is not required to use any of the booms to complete it, as they are simply driving forward to the specif ied location located by the arrow (goal).
  • Page 86 boom lifT worksiTe...
  • Page 87 U-Turn Teaches basic steering, turning radius, and counter- steering to navigate tight spaces. Obstacles are set up to encourage the trainee to be especially careful while navigating the turn. Truck Loading Requires the trainee to drive onto the back of a truck, demonstrating precise control of the wheels and steering.
  • Page 88 boom lifT worksiTe...
  • Page 89 Basket Position 2 Continues teaching basket positioning requiring boom extension and jib movement for extra reach. This scenario introduces obstacles that require precise control to avoid while maneuvering the booms. Slalom Left Teaches complex steering and familiarization with the turning radius. The turns are slightly too narrow for the equipment and require the trainee to compensate.
  • Page 90 boom lifT worksiTe...
  • Page 91 Articulated Reach The trainee must navigate a complex course along a safe incline until they reach a flat area where they can extend the boom over the incline and into the work area. Setting up on a slope is a very common error in the f ield, and one that runs counter to the design and capability of an articulated lift.
  • Page 92 boom lifT worksiTe...
  • Page 93 Sharp Incline In this deceptively simple scenario, the trainee must drive down a safe incline. To achieve this goal without slamming the basket onto the ground, they must use the jib control to raise the basket while compensating for the lever effect of the stowed boom.
  • Page 94 boom lifT worksiTe 91 91...
  • Page 95 Rough Terrain The trainee must navigate an open course on rough terrain which includes a shallow ditch. Success depends on feathering the controls, managing speed, and approaching the ditch f rom the correct angle by understanding the oscillating axle. Advanced Boom Up and Down The trainee must drive up to the open ironwork construction, rotate the basket inside, and then use the boom and jib to reach an upper and lower target while...
  • Page 96 boom lifT worksiTe...
  • Page 97 Basket Position 3 In this scenario, the trainee once again practices basket positioning, but this time while moving around complex obstacles. This will require the trainee to use every positioning skill learned so far, with the added diff iculty of working at extreme height.
  • Page 98 boom lifT worksiTe...
  • Page 99 Advanced Boom Narrow In this scenario, the trainee will have to utilize the full complement of skills learned in the previous scenarios. Driving through a narrow corridor, the trainee will need to extend to reach precise targets, most at the edge of the Boom Lift’s physical reach. Due to the comprehensive nature of this scenario, as well as to reinforce the importance of completing the task in a safe manner, the trainee is given an...

  • Page 101 Navigation - Slopes In this scenario, the trainee must navigate a maze of obstacles and unsafe areas to get to their goal. They are tempted to drive across unsound platforms and up too- steep slopes and must choose the safest path through the scenario.
  • Page 102 scissor lifT worksiTe...
  • Page 103 Trench There is a large trench in the middle of the worksite in this scenario. The trainee has to drive into and back out of the trench in the safest way possible. They will have to f ind a slope that is not too steep for their machine and drive carefully through the rough terrain to get to the goal.

  • Page 107 This scenario is a reverse of the previous scenario. The trainee starts on the bed of a truck and must drive the MEWP down a ramp to reach a goal. This simulation does not cover the full procedure for unloading a MEWP.
  • Page 108 scissor lifT worksiTe...
  • Page 109 In this scenario, the trainee must drive down a slope and around some hazards to a dirt area near a building. They will learn how to level the MEWP on uneven and rough terrain and then raise to full height.

  • Page 111 Intro To Movement This scenario begins with a full explanation of the controls used in a Scissor Lift as well as those specif ic to the simulation. We suggest using this scenario as an introduction to the simulation. After the controls are explained, the trainee will be asked to drive forward, raise and lower the basket, and drive around the corner, proving that they understand the controls.
  • Page 112 scissor lifT workshop...
  • Page 113 Extending Deck In this scenario, the trainee needs to get the basket within reach of a maintenance box. They will have to drive the vehicle into a narrow space, raise up to the appropriate height, and extend the deck to reach the box.
  • Page 114 scissor lifT workshop...
  • Page 115 Choose Incline This scenario requires the trainee to make a decision. There are three slopes that lead to the goal. The safest route is the most indirect, but the trainee will be penalized for taking more direct but unsafe routes. Slab Practical Training This scenario represents the practical part of a training exam.
