LIFETIME AND HOW TO REPLACE THE IDRONAUT SENSORS The Idronaut sensors are all pressure compensated and, in particular, the physical sensors (pressure, temperature and conductivity) can last many years, if properly used. They are high-quality sensors, as they are well known by oceanographers to measure salinity with great accuracy.

Those customers who plan to make use of the computer-oriented interface will find it helpful to look at the REDAS programme which can be supplied with the OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus PROBE. The programme allows the user to collect and save data in real-time.
SEVEN 303Plus probe through a built-in RS232-C interface and a dedicated terminal emulation programme, specifically developed for the Windows Pocket PC operating system. This programme interfaces the OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus probe and allows the operator to dialogue with the probes directly thus performing: sensor calibration, data acquisition, probe configuration, etc. All these operations are possible thanks to the OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus probe smartness included in the management firmware.

A short presentation of the standard IDRONAUT OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus sensors follows. When the OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus probe is housed in the AISI 316L metallic housing, the special combined sensors: Temperature + Conductivity or Temperature + Dissolved Oxygen + Conductivity are installed. Apart from their mechanically shape, the performance of the single or combined sensor is below described.
(this construction is for the 7000 dbar conductivity sensor version only). Both the Idronaut conductivity sensor and its associated electronics are designed to work both with plain and black platinised platinum electrodes. These electrodes have the advantage that, they can be used in both clean and dirty water without the fear of contamination.

1.10.4.2 Oxygen measurement priming The OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus probe allows the operator to obtain the oxygen data either expressed in ppm or % Saturation. The formula which connects these two functions is given as by: ppm = Saturation x Solubility / 100 The relevant formulae for the computation of saturation and solubility can be found in the section 1.5.2).
The IDRONAUT reference sensor is in contact with the unknown solution by means of a small hole in the glass tip. This minimizes and stabilizes the junction potential between the inner gel electrolyte and the liquid to be measured.

Start-up procedure. See below. HOW TO OPERATE THE PROBE The probe can be operated through the IDRONAUT TERMINAL emulation software per Windows (for brevity’s sake, hereafter referred to as “ITERM”). The “ITERM” software is described in a dedicated section of this Operator’s Manual.
A. Voltage can be read between pin “1” and pin “gnd” of connector marked with PROBE. Example: voltage necessary for 750 metres of IDRONAUT cable is: 12 + (0.115 x 750 x 0.05) = 16.3 V IDRONAUT –...

SECTION THREE – PROBE COMMANDS The OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus probe is capable to manage two different conductivity scales: one dedicated to the salt water environment and another one dedicated to the fresh water environment. The conductivity sensor is usually very stable and precise. A check of any drift with time or calibration can be performed by using a Standard Solution.
After the operator has entered the pH BUFFER value, the calibration procedure continues and the following message appears: Immerse pH and REF sensors Pull out the calibration buffer cup from the accessory kit and fill it with the pH buffer solution. In fact, a wrong modification of one of these protected operating parameters could cause malfunction of the OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus. Details on how to gain access to the advanced set-up are discussed in the section dedicated to the “probe Rights”.

SECTION THREE – PROBE COMMANDS A time-out to be spent at the probe start-up can be configured. An OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus probe equipped with chemical sensors, like: pH, DO , redox, etc. cannot get a warm-up fewer than 5 seconds. In case of long-term deployment, a time-out of 10/15 seconds should be foreseen.
“Administrative” rights. A detailed description of each parameter follows. As mentioned in the introduction, the OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus PROBE does not usually perform spot measurements but a certain number of sensor scans are carried out and the single values are averaged and stored in memory or shown on the user's screen.

Answer 3.4.7 Firmware upgrading The OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus probe management firmware can be updated in field. To perform this procedure special tools: cable to connect to the probe internal circuits) and instructions are needed. Contact IDRONAUT to receive the relevant information and help.
Most polarographic oxygen sensors take 5 to 10 minutes after they have been switched on to polarize and become stable. To overcome this limitation, the Idronaut OS303Plus has been fitted with a small internal rechargeable battery, to maintain polarization of the oxygen sensor continuously. However, if the probe is not used for several months, the polarizing battery may become completely discharged resulting in damage to the battery.
It is recommended that only the IDRONAUT electrolyte be used, since its composition and pH guarantee the best performance and minimize the formation and growing of silver chloride on the anode.

REFERENCE SENSOR ❖ During all periods of inactivity, the reference sensor must be always hydrated with the IDRONAUT REFERENCE SENSOR STORAGE SOLUTION or, if not available, even with KCl saturated solution, using the plastic hydrating cap.
If the probe remains unused for periods longer than one day, always place the hydrating caps on both sensors. IDRONAUT – Brugherio (MB) OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus PROBE 02-2019...
SECTION FOUR – PROBE MAINTENANCE The pH sensor cap should be filled with the pH7 Buffer Solution (or simply with clean water). The reference sensor cap should be filled with the Idronaut Reference Sensor Storage Solution (or even with KCl saturated solution).
Replacement of the pressure transducer could however become necessary if an extension of the operating range (depth) is required. In that case, the whole Probe must be returned to Idronaut to allow replacement, calibration and performance check of the sensor.
SECTION FIVE – ITERM, IDRONAUT TERMINAL EMULATION SOFTWARE ITERM – WINDOWS TERMINAL EMULATION PROGRAMME The aim of the ITERM programme is to provide a simple and reliable tool that IDRONAUT customers can freely use to communicate with their products, like the OCEAN SEVEN probes. ITERM does not need any special installation procedure and, if needed - due to its small dimensions - it can be used from a floppy disk too.

SECTION FIVE – ITERM, IDRONAUT TERMINAL EMULATION SOFTWARE More than one cast can be selected by using the mouse and the CTRL or SHIFT keyboard key. “Target directory” must be configured before starting the upload. After the target directory has been configured and the desired cast has been selected from the cast list window, the upload button can be pressed.
PTP COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL The OCEAN SEVEN 303Plus probe is operated according to a series of rules and message formats commonly indicated with the term “communication protocol”. Connect the Portable Deck Unit “RS232C” connector to a PC serial port by means of the IDRONAUT cable. Check that the “BATTERY MONITOR” green LED is ON or connect the external battery charger.
Therefore, only the DECK UNIT telemetry must be tuned. The following step-by-step instructions describe how to act. 1. If not already done, run the ITERM Idronaut “Terminal emulation” software. 2. Connect the Deck unit to the PC communication port. 3. Switch the probe ON by means of the Deck unit switch.
