Coolants
Coolants
The engine coolant is a mixture of
w ater and anticorrosion/antifreeze,
w hich provides:
•
corrosion protection
•
freeze protection
•
boiling protection (by increasing
the boiling point).
The cooling system was filled at the
factory with a coolant providing freeze
protection to — 30° C/ — 22° F and
corrosion protection. The red area of
the tem perature gauge is matched to
the heating properties of this coolant
solution.
The coolant solution m ust be used
year round to provide the necessary
corrosion protection and increase in
the boil-over protection. You should
have it replaced every 3 years.
To provide the im portant corrosion
protection, the solution m ust be at
least 33 % anticorrosion/antifreeze
(equals a freeze protection to — 20° C/
— 4°F). If you use a solution that is
m ore than 55 % a n ticorrosion/anti

freeze (freeze protection to —40° C/
— 40° F), the engine tem perature
will increase due to the lower heat
transfer capability of the solution.
Therefore, do not use m ore than this
am ount of anticorrosion/antifreeze.
If the coolant level is low, w ater and
MB anticorrosion/antifreeze should
be used to bring it up to the proper
level (have cooling system checked
fo r signs of leakage).
The w ater in the cooling system m ust
m eet minimum requirem ents, which
are usually satisfied by normal d rin k
ing water. If you are not sure about
the w ater quality, consult your author
ized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer.
A nticorrosion/antifreeze
Y our vehicle contains a num ber of
aluminium parts. The use of alumin
ium com ponents in m otor vehicle
engines necessitates that a nticorro
sion/antifreeze/coolant used in such
engines be specifically form ulated to
p ro te ct the aluminium parts. (Failure
to use such anticorrosio n /a n ti
free ze/coolant may result in a signifi
cantly shortened service life.)
While there may be a num ber of
anticorrosion/antifreeze/coolants
available w hich will provide the requi
site protection, all such prod
ucts have not been tested fo r
MERCEDES-BENZ vehicles. The fo l
lowing product, however, is recom
mended fo r use in your car:

Before the start of the w inter season
(or once a year in the hot southern
regions), you should have the anticor
rosion/antifreeze concentration
checked. The coolant is also regularly
checked each time you bring your
vehicle to your authorized
MERCEDES-BENZ dealer fo r mainte
nance service.
