  • Page 3 Congratulations on your purchase of EcoSpeed’s Electric Mid-Drive for the Sun EZ-1 model recumbent bicycles. The Electric Mid-Drive is the world’s best multi-speed, throttle operated, electric-assist conver- sion and the only electric-assist designed specifically to fit a variety of recumbent bicycles.
  • Page 4 If you have a work area where it’s OK to put hooks in the ceiling, you can hang the bike from the ceiling using ropes or straps. Put in two hooks about 3 feet (1 meter) apart and hang the handlebar ends from these. Put in a third hook a couple of feet behind the bike and hang one of the seat cross braces from this hook.
  • Page 5 Step 4: Attach EMD unit. 1) Align the clamps with the holes in the EMD motor plate as is photo 3. (It may be easier to have a friend hold the EMD in place while you insert bolts) 2) Attach the EMD to the clamps using 4 M5 x 25mm bolts.
  • Page 6 Step 6: Attach drive sprocket and chain-guard assembly. Attach the drive sprocket and chain-guard assembly to the drive spindle using 5 M6 x 25mm button head bolts as shown in photo Tighten all 5 bolts securely. Step 7: Install the chain guide tube. 1) Attach using M5 x 16mm bolt to the slot at the rear of the mo- tor plate as shown in photo 6.
  • Page 7 2) Tighten the nut and bolt hold- ing the bracket to the motor plate. Step 10: Install the chain idler arm. If the rear chain clears the rear brake when shifted into any gear, then this step is not necessary. 1) Attach the chain idler you re- moved in step 2 to the included idler arm assembly.
  • Page 8 3) Connect the throttle to the motor. 4) Don’t secure the throttle wire with wire ties yet. Wait until you test the system and know that everything is working then secure all the wires to the frame with the in- cluded wire ties.
