  • Page 4: Glossary Time Terms

GLOSSARY TIME TERMS In alphabetic order: Accuracy - The degree of conformity of a measured or calculated value to its definition or with respect to a standard reference time. In the meaning of NTP (Network Time Protocol) the accuracy determines how close the PC clock is to UTC reference (GNSS or external atomic clock).
  • Page 5 hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium - 133 atom. Synchronization - The process of measuring the difference in time of two time scales such as the output signals generated by two clocks. In the context of timing, synchronization means to bring two clocks or data streams into phase so that their difference is 0 (see time scales in synchronism).

  • Page 16: Multisource. New Concept Of Time Source

    5. Multisource. New concept of Time Source A true novelty of NTS-3000/4000/5000 is real multi source time concept. Product can take simultaneously a reference time from its all available hardware inputs. Compering to other existing solutions, it does not take “best” or “selected” source, but it is automatically and continuously computing weighted average UTC output out of all available sources (clocks) including groups: ...
  • Page 17: Target Utc. The True Output Time

Using local atomic clocks let produce high accuracy and stable UTC output for NTP/PTP. Single source configuration of NTS-3000 connected to Cesium Primary Reference Std. 5071A Clock To allow output UTC (clock) quickly achieve high accuracy, yet avoid overshooting the time with large time adjustments, timeserver uses large adjustments (after power-up) occur quickly and small adjustments occur over time for normal mode of operation.
  • Page 18 Computing target output UTC time from multisource NTS-3000/4000/5000. Step adjustment is possible after Power-ON only. For multisource the synchronization and output UTC is much more complicated. Several steps are involved by NTS-3000/4000/5000 in determining the correct time on server’s inputs. Although some of these steps are not necessary when synchronizing to a single source (i.e.
  • Page 19 would be the result of incorrectly set clocks, it is possible (but very unlikely) that a Falseticker may have a incorrectly set clock as the result of time manipulation (i.e. GPS spoofing). These kind of tricky things are similar acting to “time machine”. Spoofing GPS is one of most popular, but unfortunately not the only one.

  • Page 22: Mounting Gps Antenna

    8. Mounting GPS antenna The GPS satellite time receiver has been designed to provide extremely precise time. High precision available 24 hours a day around the whole world. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based radio-positioning, navigation, and time- transfer system.
  • Page 23 The hardware of the GPS antenna contains in one box. In a box are placed GPS receiver, frequency converter and basic over-voltage protection. Box is water resistant (IP67) therefore it should stay over water level during rain. Figure 7: NTS GPS antenna box – interior Figure 6: NTS GPS antenna box The metal handler should be mounted on top of building.
  • Page 24 For connecting antenna (GPS or DPS + DCF77) box we recommend usage of UTP or STP CAT5 cables (for external environment. use) with standard RJ-45 connector termination (both sides) with standard T568B conductors assignment. Cable should be leaded into antenna box through cable gland. Please use standard Ethernet cramping tooling (not included to NTS set) to mount antenna cable connection.
  • Page 25: Powering Up Nts

    9. Powering up NTS If both the antenna (GPS, DCF77 or GPS+DCF77) and the power supply have been connected the system is ready to operate. You can turn on a power switch located on the back panel of NTS server. Typically, time duration of NTS server power-up is enough for the antenna (GPS) box receiver to start to operate with the required accuracy.
  • Page 26: Basic Device Configuration

    10. Basic device configuration After first power up, at least basic configuration should be performed in order to setup proper interfaces IP configuration. This can be done using front panel keyboard. Figure 8: NTS–5000 Front panel Keyboard To enter setup mode press and hold “OK” button. Now you can configure LAN1 interface.

  • Page 29: Ntp - Network Time Protocol

    12. NTP – Network Time Protocol NTP is a common method for time synchronization over networks. The NTP is much different from any of known other communication protocols. It is because NTP does not base on the principles of synchronizing machines to each other. It is based on the principles of having all machines get as close as possible to the UTC time provided by NTS servers.
  • Page 30 Figure 9: Time Adjustments Using Stepping and Slewing Due to NTP specification NTS server is visible over network as a peer. Single peer can contain more than single timeservers in order of a hierarchy called stratum. The top of the stratum tree is preserved for radio-controlled timeservers such as NTS server.
  • Page 31 The NTS-5000 has three additional sources: Internal Time Patterns #STRATA 1x IRIG-B signal (external connector) STRATUM-0 1x OCXO (1PPS) internal quartz oscillator for GPS failure STRATUM-0 1x Rubidium (1PPS) internal atomic clock for GPS failure STRATUM-0 * - special feature option (required to be purchased separately) A high precision synchronization is chosen by NTP automatically.
  • Page 32: Ntp On Time Failure Tolerance Network

    13. NTP on Time Failure Tolerance Network Multiple time source system of NTS – 4000 already improves safety because it protects situation when a single source could fail. But it is also possible to use several NTS – 4000 units simultaneously to improve stability of the time synchronization.
  • Page 33 One NTS time server can be used as a support for another NTS server, delivering time into a secured LAN isolated from the Internet. This solution requires 2x NTS servers working together. In the latter instance, first NTS works as an antenna emulator (STRATUM-0) for another NTS, enabling safe time synchronization (no TCP IP communication) between.

    14. NTS software Setup For the very first time of installation the NTS–5000 has to be configured by resetting to defaults values. Please press and hold simultaneously “OK” and “C” buttons on front panel keyboard. The settings will be displayed on front panel LCD. You will have to configure one of your local computer (in example laptop) to IP number and MASK which is suitable to connect to the unit or setup basic IP configuration as described in “Powering NTS”...

You can enable extra broadcast and multicast modes running in the background of standard client/server mode, but we suggest to finish basic configuration first before you go to more advanced options. Therefore please leave those options for the moment now by simply filling fields 0.

  • Page 39 If your network support SNMP, you can configure special MIB2 traps to implement exceptional facts you can be interesting in. It is very easy to set traps on such way that you will be informed by mail or mobile phone (SMS) on any unexpected situation may occur inside NTS server like e.g.
  • Page 40 Another step is you can define up to 3 NTP backup servers for single NTS server unit. In this mode NTS server reminds Stratum 1 as long as GPS antenna works fine or any other time source (PPS_IN, Rubidium, OCXO). But in case of missing accurate time source NTS server checks backup servers list.
  • Page 41 NTS server can work with no GPS, PPS_IN nor IRIG-B source of time. It can even operate with no backup NTP servers, just based on internal OCXO (when previously synchronized) or RTC time source. For that reason you need to be able to set up manually UTC date and time. However you don't have to do it because once GPS (IRIG-B or DCF) signal is starting to be receive that automatic RTC and OCXO synchronization is proceeded.
  • Page 42 NTS server is ready to work in NTP authentication modes. This is valid for all modes of synchronization including: • broadcast, • multicast, • client/server and NTP backup communication. This screen helps you generate SSL and SSH keys. You can also edit MD5 keys, but generation is not supported by NTS server.

  • Page 44: Security And Ntp Authentication Mode

    15. Security and NTP authentication mode The notion of accurate time is essential to determining the order in which events occur. This is a fundamental aspect of transactional integrity, system and network- wide logging and auditing, and troubleshooting and forensics. Having an accurate time source plays a critical role in trading and debugging problems that occur on different platforms across a network.
  • Page 45 Figure 24: Broadcast NTP mode You can enter and view NTS server MD5 keys in AUTH menu. All entered keys are considered to be trusted for time service needs, but there is default nopeer nomodify restriction in NTS server access control list. You have to put the same keys at the same positions to file (/etc/ntp.keys) on client side.
  • Page 46 You can have many NTP clients accessing NTS server in broadcast and multicast modes. Please note, that in default client NTP setup these modes requre authenticated packets to work (unless you add disable auth line to your ntp.conf file). Make sure, that you choose appropriate broadcast and multicast address. Please refer to original ntp documentation for further details about authenticated modes, and planing subnet synchronization using broadcast and multicast.
