INTRODUCTION

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING AN IDEAL 18 TO GET
UNDERWAY AND RETURNING TO THE DOCK.
AS YOU APPROACH THE BOAT YOU ARE GOING TO SAIL,
TAKE NOTE OF WHERE THE BOAT IS LOCATED ON THE
DOCK AND WHERE THE LINES AND FENDERS ARE LOCATED.
IT IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE BOATS END UP IN
THE SAME ORIENTATION, IE BOW IN OUR OUT. WHEN YOU
GET UNDERWAY, TAKE THE FENDERS WITH YOU AND LEAVE
THE DOCK LINES ATTACHED TO THE DOCK.

1. PUMP THE BILGE AND ADJUST THE SCUPPERS (PG 3-4)
2. REMOVE THE JIB SAIL COVER (PG 5-6)
3. REMOVE THE MAIN SAIL COVER (PG 7-8)
4. PREPARE THE SPINNAKER (PG 9-11)
5. BRING IN THE FENDERS (PG 12)
6. HOIST A SAIL
7. GET UNDERWAY
THE FOLLOWING PAGES PROVIDE PHOTOS AND
INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH STEP OF EACH OF THE ABOVE
EVOLUTIONS.
WHEN YOU RETURN, PUT THE BOAT IN THE SAME
ORIENTATION (YES WE HAVE SAID THAT BEFORE). PG 12
1. LOWER ALL SAILS
2. STOW MAIN (PG 13-15)
3. STOW SPINNAKER (PG 16)
4. STOW JIB (PG 17)
5. SECURE HELM (PG 18)
6. MAKE SURE FENDERS AND LINES ARE SECURED, ONE
FENDER LOOPED AROUND THE MAST AND FENDER
PUSHED THROUGH EYE IN LINE. OTHER FENDER
THROUGH BLOCK AND CAM CLEAT ON SIDE OF BOAT
WITH A KNOT TIED INBOARD TO PREVENT IT FROM
GETTING LOST.
REPORT ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE BOAT

  • Page 5 REMOVING JIB SHEET SAIL COVER 1 OF 2 FIRST STEP IS TO LOOSEN THE SPINNAKER HALYARD WHICH HOLDS THE JIB SAIL COVER IN PLACE NEXT REMOVE THE TIES HOLDING THE SAIL COVER DOWN, IF ANY, AND OPEN THE ZIPPER CONTINUE TO UNZIP THE SAIL COVER TO CONTINUE YOU MUST PULL DOWN ON THE SAIL...
  • Page 6 REMOVING THE JIB SAIL COVER 2 OF 2 ONCE THE ENTIRE COVER IS UNZIPPED, REMOVE THE SPINNAKER HALYARD FROM THE COVER ATTACH THE SPINNAKER HALYARD TO THE RING ON THE FORWARD PART OF THE MAST. TRIM HALYARD UNTIL IT IS SNUG.

  • Page 13 STOWING THE MAIN 1 OF 3 REMOVE THE MAIN HALYARD AND ATTACH IT TO THE RING ON THE FORWARD SIDE OF THE MAST. TRIM THE MAIN HALYARD SNUG, THEN START FLAKING THE SAIL ON THE BOOM CONTINUE UNTIL YOU HAVE THE SAIL NEATLY FLAKED, THEN SECURE WITH THE SAIL TIES.
  • Page 14 STOWING THE MAIN 2 OF 3 CONTINUE TO FLAKE AND TIE AS YOU PROCEED UP THE BOOM. MAKE THE SAIL TIES TIGHT. ONCE THE SAIL IS SECURED, GET THE SAIL COVER FROM UNDER THE FOREDECK. REMOVE THE SPINNAKER HALYARD IF ATTACHED TO THE RING, IT IS USED FOR THE JIB SAIL COVER.
  • Page 15 STOWING THE MAIN 3 OF 3 SECURE THE SAIL COVER TO THE MAST, ZIP IT UP AND TIE IT UP, IF SMALL LINES ARE ATTACHED. NEXT MOVE TO THE STERN AND TIE THE SAIL COVER TO THE EYE HOLDING THE TOPPING LIFT.
  • Page 16 STOWING SPINNAKER REMOVE THE SPINNAKER HALYARD AND ATTACH TO THE RING ON THE TOP OF THE JIB COVER. MAKE SURE THE SPINNAKER IS DRY, PLACE IN BAG SO THAT THE EDGES RUN FREE AND THE HEAD TACK AND CLEW ARE ON TOP SNAP THE TWEAKERS TO THE CAM CLEAT AND TIGHTEN.
  • Page 17 SECURING THE JIB PUT THE JIB COVER AROUND THE JIB AT EYE LEVEL AND ZIP A SHORT DISTANCE. ENSURE THE SPINNAKER HALYARD IS ATTACHED TO THE TOP OF THE COVER. YOU OR YOUR CREW MEMBER SHOULD PULL ON THE HALYARD WHILE THE PERSON AT THE JIB CONTINUES TO ZIP THE COVER OVER THE SAIL.
  • Page 18 SECURING THE HELM THE HELM IS HELD IN MIDSHIP POSITION WITH A LINE RUNNING FROM THE DECK EYE HOLDING THE SPINNAKER BLOCKS. TIE A BOWLINE TO THE STBD SIDE EYE. NORMALLY LEFT ON THERE IS A LOOP IN THE LINE THAT SLIDES OVER THE HELM, PUT IT ON.
