INTRODUCTION General Description CAPITAL CONTROLS® Series 71V3B Electrically Heated Vaporizers are used to convert liquid Chlorine, Sulfur Dioxide or Ammonia, as specified at time of purchase, into a superheated gaseous state. The Vaporizer consist of a vaporizing chamber housed within a self-standing vented water chamber heated by an integrally mounted electric immersion heater.

Component Description Refer to Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to supplement the following text. 1.3.1 General In addition to the components described in Section 1.3.2, which comprise the Basic Vaporizer Unit, all Vaporizer Systems should be piped and valved to include the auxiliary components as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
  • Page 11: Water Temperature Control

1.3.2.6 Water Temperature Control The water bath temperature is measured using a T-Type thermocouple connected to a programmable electronic temperature controller. The controller regulates the water temperature and provides the following functions: • Control of the temperatures at which the heater turns on and off (with programmable hysteresis) •...

The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requires a pressure relief valve on each Vaporizer. This component is mandatory on all systems, and is available from De Nora Water Technologies. The pressure relief valve serves to automatically relieve excess gas pressure which would otherwise develop in the event that the Vaporizer is isolated by valve closure.
  • Page 13: Vent Blow-Off Valve

As an alternative to the above, De Nora Water Technologies offers a Purge Meter (P/N 806H022U01) for trickle-filling of the Vaporizer. Installation of this Purge Meter assembly and the associated piping is shown in the Recommended Piping Arrangements inset of Figure 3.
  • Page 14: Installation

INSTALLATION Select a location which can be isolated from unauthorized personnel. The selected location should be indoors where the ambient temperature does not fall below freezing. Select a well ventilated room provided with a source of heat to maintain an ambient temperature above freezing at all times for Chlorine and Ammonia, and above 70°F for Sulfur Dioxide.
  • Page 15: Electrical Interconnections

Heat tracing of the pipe section between the Vaporizer and pressure reducing valve may also be advisable to maintain the gas superheat temperature. This is especially true for Sulfur Dioxide service. Refer to the super heat curves further in this manual. Note also that the addition of a gas filter in this pipe section will act as a heat sink further reducing the super heat temperature.

Vaporizer. NOTE It is recommended that De Nora Water Technologies be contacted to obtain the services of trained personnel to assist and instruct plant operating personnel at the time of initial start-up. At that time the De Nora Water Technologies service personnel will instruct plant operators in the steps to be taken for replenishing the supply of liquid chemical when the in-service supply is exhausted.

Electrical Apply AC power to the control circuit connection box (see Figures 6 through 9). Energize the immersion heater by closing the circuit breaker in the power supply line to the heater. While the Vaporizer is warming-up, leak test all piping. NOTE All connections must be made in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA-70 and/or all applicable local codes.
  • Page 25: Optional Water Level Control

Connect a source of Chlorine, Sulfur Dioxide or Ammonia gas to the Vaporizer supply piping. DO NOT use liquid Chlorine, Sulfur Dioxide or Ammonia for leak testing since one volume of liquid Chlorine expands to roughly 450 volumes of gas. Leave the first in-line valve closed.

NOTE: Figures 12, 13 & 14 show the effect of the ambient temperature on the pressure in the gas source containers. This relationship is shown as the solid line on the graphs. Setting the heater temperature controller during cooler ambient temperatures will require that the controller set point be increased as the ambient temperature rises in order to maintain the proper superheat shown on the dotted line of the graphs.

Although the Vaporizer may be operated at any temperature up to 205°F. It is recommended that the Vaporizer be disassembled, cleaned and inspected when the heater Duty Cycle reaches 90%, even if the operating temperature is less than 205°F. The Duty Cycle may be timed using a stopwatch or equivalent and is determined as follows: On Time + Off Time = Total Time Duty Cycle = On Time Total Time...
  • Page 32: Shutdown For Non-Extended Periods

3.10 Shutdown for Non-Extended Periods This procedure is for those instances where gas feed will be intermittent and the Vaporizer is maintained at the operating temperature. If the Vaporizer heater is to be turned off, refer to paragraph 3.11. WARNING Do not close any valves on the liquid gas piping or the source containers.
  • Page 33: Maintenance

Therefore, only De Nora Water Technologies parts, manufactured from materials selected for their proper corrosion-resistant properties, must be used. When ordering parts, always furnish the complete model and serial number of the Vaporizer, and the chemical being used.

Then remove the mounting bolts from the support flange (i.e., the bolts which extend through the lip of the water chamber); and lift the vaporizing chamber from the water chamber using the lifting eyes (provided in the support flange for this purpose) and a one ton capacity overhead chain hoist.
  • Page 35 Be certain to orient the support flange so that the inlet and outlet connections of the vaporizing chamber are located in their original position. However, do not reconnect the removable pipe sections at this point. If the Vaporizer is equipped with cathodic protection, it is recommended that the magnesium rods be replaced at this time.

This information is included here to indicate the severity of some of the moisture problems possible when using Sulfur Dioxide (SO ). Please note that the failed Vaporizers mentioned in this excerpt were not manufactured by De Nora Water Technologies. CAUTION If using the method of water removal detailed in the excerpt below, possible vacuum damage may occur to rupture discs without vacuum backing plates diaphragm seals used on pressure switches and gauges.
  • Page 41 The amount of moisture that collects in the container will depend upon the moisture content in the SO and the rate of SO withdrawals. Therefore, each installation will require a special procedure of boil-off time and frequency of boil-off. In most cases moisture will be visible in the sulfonator rotameter tube, and when this moisture disappears the boil-off procedure can be terminated.
