It is important to allow this process to occur as short frequent excessive usage can cause heat build-up and potential failure.

Ideally people other than the driver of the two vehicles should position themselves behind a tree, large rock or over a ridge completely away from any chance of a projectile harming them and NEVER place themselves in the path of the vehicle performing the recovery.
