Sections are sub-divided into sub-headings, for example - 1.1 Features. These may also be subdivided. Terminology The terms CTR5000 Bridge, AC Bridge, CTR5000, bridge and instrument are used interchangeably in this manual. Menu selection is shown in shorthand form, for example –...
CTR5000 Operating Instructions Important safety information Read and understand the user instruction manual before attempting to use the instrument. The CTR5000 is an AC bridge designed for measuring passive resistances. It must not be used for any other purpose. Warning The protection provided by the instrument may be impaired if the equipment is not used in the manner specified.

The performance and multi-channel capabilities make it ideal for a wide range of applications. The CTR5000 Bridge is based on AC technology and operates with all 4-wire Platinum Resistance Thermometers (PRTs) . Features include –...
Two measurement channels (A and B) are provided on the front of the instrument. The CTR5000 may be expanded up to six channels with the addition of two more channels (C and D), or four more channels (C, D, E and F) on the rear of the instrument; differential mode operation is provided for these channels.
Units can be set on a per probe basis (probes are assigned to channels). When a new channel is selected, the CTR5000 will check to see if a probe is assigned to that channel. If it is, the programmed probe’s units will be used (initially) - this does not prevent the units from...
Security is important for data integrity and password protection helps to ensure that only authorised personnel can change calibration or system information. Three levels of protection are provided. CTR5000 Operating Instructions 3. About the CTR5000 Precision Bridge This section introduces the features and functions of the CTR5000 Bridge. Each of the CTR5000 Bridge’s features is explained in turn. Once the CTR5000 has been set to your particular requirements, all commonly used functions are available using the minimum number of key- strokes.
The soft-keys are used to access data and/or functions within the instrument. The CTR5000 keypad is shown in detail below. The keys are used to select the various functions and menu options and to control the instrument. Generally, all commonly used functions are available at the top level and no more than one or two menu levels are required for other commonly used settings.

Two 5-pin DIN input sockets (channel A and channel B) are located on the front panel and up to four more sockets may be present on the back of the CTR5000 (channels C, D, E and F). Up to four expansion switchboxes may be attached to the instrument via the rear expansion port connector.
Alternatively, Smart Probes can be used. These probes contain the calibration data within the probe connector and this data will be used to over-ride any internal CTR5000 settings when a smart-probe is seen on an input channel.
Refer to document ASL-SMP-10-101 Smart Probe Conversion Kit. 3.5.6 Internal 100Ω check resistor The CTR5000 contains an internal check resistor. Select channel 99 to use this resistor (IntR will displayed at the top left of the LCD). It is quite accurate, but not as temperature-stable the internal reference resistor.
An expansion port connector is provided on the rear panel. The connector enables up to four CTS5000 switchboxes to be used to expand the number of input connections to provide up to 64 additional channels. ASL operating instructions, model CTR5000...
3.6.6 RS232/LAN/IEEE 488 Communication interface connector The CTR5000 may (optionally) be fitted with one of these interfaces. Operation is similar for all communication interfaces. See the chapter of communications for further details. The optional interface and USB connection may be used simultaneously. However, when sending commands to the CTR5000, operation will depend on timing and may not provide the expected sequence of operation.

CTR5000 Operating Instructions 4.6 Calibration It is vital to ensure the CTR5000 is correctly calibrated to obtain the most accurate results. Good laboratory practice dictates that any instrument should be checked before and after a day’s measurements. Note Regularly check calibration.

CTR5000 may be fitted with an RS232 or LAN or IEEE interface. The commands are buffered by the CTR5000 (saved in order of arrival) so more than one command can be sent to the instrument without waiting for the previous one to complete.
The IEEE interface uses an 8-bit data bus and software protocol to transfer data in parallel. Each instrument connected to the bus must have a unique address. This address may be changed at any time using the Comms menu. The CTR5000 slave bus address has a default address of 3.
