In the NTSC format, there are a total of 525 lines. Not all of these lines are part of the image. Some contain synchronization and other information. The TARGA 3000 digitizes CCIR 601 at 720 x 486 for NTSC, and 720 x 576 for PAL.
The TARGA 3000 card with the TARGA Pro Analog Breakout Box accepts analog input in the form of S-Video (Y/C), Composite Video, and Component (YUV) video. The TARGA 3000 with the TARGA Pro Digital Breakout Box only accepts serial digital input.
Note: Any file created (compressed) on a TARGA 3000 installed PC, but played on a PC which does not have a card similar to TARGA, will retain its “full frame” capability, but may not retain the guaranteed “full motion”...
10,000 or better rpm ultra-2 wide drives, or a SCSI 160M, is essential in order for you to achieve the necessary data rates for optimal results. Calculating Disk Storage To determine how many minutes of video you can store per gigabyte (GByte) of disk space, you can use the following chart as a quick reference: KByte = 1,000 MByte* = 1,000,000 (as disk manufacturers define it) GByte = 1,000,000,000 __________________ KBytes...
Page 26
29.97 frames per second x 720 pixels wide x 486 pixels high x 2 bytes per pixel = 20,974,205 total bytes per second Two bytes per pixel comes from the fact that TARGA 3000 supports a compression that uses YUV 4:2:2 video. For every four pixels of video there is 4 bytes of Y, 2 bytes of U, and 2 bytes of V which is a total of eight bytes for every four pixels, or two bytes per pixel.
Some video products, such as the TARGA 3000, utilize resolutions with non-square pixels. As mentioned previously, the resolution of NTSC for TARGA 3000 is 720 x 480. On a video monitor, the video signal displays more pixels in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction for a given length.
Note: The TARGA 3000 always works in native CCIR 601. No distortion will occur if TARGA 3000 effects, transitions, and titles are used. Also, no distortion will occur if the effects, transitions, and titles used are CCIR 601 compatible.
About TARGA 3000 Audio The audio rate that is supported by TARGA 3000 is 48 kHz, 16 bit, stereo. The TARGA 3000, when used with Adobe Premiere, will also support 44.1 kHz and 32 kHz via the sample rate conversion feature (which should always be set to “Best”) found in Adobe Premiere.
Reliable And Non-Reliable Media Or Constructs The TARGA 3000 card streams a wide range of media and constructs in real time without dropping frames. Such media and timeline constructs are considered real-time reliable. There are some types of media and constructs though that will cause the TARGA to drop frames.
The following is a list of non-reliable real-time media for TARGA 3000: • Video -- AVI video files compressed by compressors other than TARGA 3000, such as Cinepak. Video files in non-AVI format, such as .MOV files (QuickTime videos). Video files in frame sizes that are not in full-frame sizes of NTSC 720 x 486 or PAL 720 x 576, and at the NTSC frame rate of 29.97 fps or at the PAL frame rate of 25 fps.
Pinnacle Technical Support. 1. What are the best drives for use with the TARGA 3000? How do I configure them? Why and when do I need a SCSI card or disk array? Which SCSI card is best for use with the TARGA 3000? The important things to remember are to use equipment that is Ultra-2-Wide or Ultra 160 SCSI that does 10,000 rpm or better and is Audio-Video (AV) rated.

The primary criteria for evaluating digital components of your system is their ability to keep pace with the stream of data, both video and audio. TARGA 3000 has a NTSC full frame resolution at 720 x 480 pixels, for a total of 307,200 pixels. At 30 frames per second, that’s 9,216,000 pixels per second.

These operate the same was as described later in this chapter in the section on Backgrounds. • A Blur slider, which varies the fuzziness of the face, edge or shadow detail. You can adjust the slider, or type in a precise number.

The first part of this guide provides a description of TARGA 3000 effects and how to use each part of the interface. The second part of the guide walks through the construction of a number of typical effects as examples on using the editor.
The Difference Between Filters And Transitions Transitions and filters are treated in very similar ways in the TARGA 3000. A transition is an effect that combines two video input sources, and a filter is an effect that modifies just a single input source. The output of a transition is a video frame while the output of a filter is a video frame and a key signal that indicates how it should be keyed over elements beneath it in the timeline.
-- This area allows you to play and step through an effect and see the overlay. • Parameter Pages -- This area allows you to set the specific parameters of each effect. • Keyframer -- This area allows you to control the way effects evolve over time. Pinnacle Systems TARGA 3000...
Although at first this may seem complicated, this mode of operation is one of the features that makes the TARGA 3000 a powerful creative tool; it is drawn more from the core technology of compositing systems than from traditional editing systems.
In addition there is an “Empty” node which indicates that there is “space” to attach an additional node at this point. This is because the number of inputs to the two effects primitives is fixed by the hardware and does not change. Pinnacle Systems TARGA 3000...

• File Name -- Files should be saved as .pky files and stored in the appropriate subdirectory of the TARGA 3000 folder in your program files directory. • Description -- This is a free text area to describe the effect. A number of graphics are provided with the TARGA 3000 which provide a variety of different types of soft edges. The soft edged graphic must be set as the second input to the transform processor and chosen as the key source in order for softness to become active.
Color Color correction in the TARGA 3000 is performed via a “Look-up Table.” This is also known as curve based color correction. A graph represents the way in which input color values are translated into output color values. The color corrector allows you to perform fine adjustments to the colors of the image. The curve defines the input to output transfer function of the color components.

There are a number of different type of softness graphics that are shipped with the TARGA 3000 which appear in the graphics directory. Additional graphics can be added by using setup to add additional directories. These graphics can be used in creative ways to add sophisticated borders or other types of effect.

The Mixer provides some controls on how the images are layered together. Input 1 is layered over 2, which is layered over 3, which is then layered over the background (in the case of a filter). Appendix A: TARGA 3000 Effects Guide...

Note that chroma keying is a fine art and it is hard to get perfect results. The TARGA 3000 chroma keyer can pull a good key off clean well-lit footage, but will be unable to perform perfect keys if the input is challenging. In cases where the key is too complex for the hardware keyer, we recommend you use the Primatte Keyer in the Commotion Pro package that accompanies some versions of the TARGA 3000.

Keyframes are set independently for each node. When you select a node in the tree, then the keyframes for that node will appear as the larger circles in the timeline. You have a SCSI boot drive (internal) and an A/V drive (external). Your data rates are not acceptable and occasionally the system freezes and lockups. — Your problem is probably related to SCSI Termination. You should always use an active terminator on the end of your SCSI chain. Another problem in this scenario is that you may have placed your SCSI card in the middle of your SCSI chain.
Remove any peripheral cards except for your VGA card, your SCSI controller card and your TARGA 3000. If this solves the speed issue then you can add back your other cards being careful to “manually”...

4. Verify that audio was captured. 5. Check for possible IRQ conflicts in your system. 6. Check the audio output settings for the TARGA 3000. (For example, the settings could be set to RCA instead of XLR). You record audio in mono, but when you play back there doesn’t seem to be any audio.
2. Make sure the TARGA software is correctly installed. 3. Reinstall the video-editing software because it may have become corrupted. 4. If other video clips captured with the TARGA 3000 play back correctly, the file could have become corrupted or fragmented. Delete and recapture the clip.
