In 1969, Ken Tyrreli's Tyrrell Racing Organization won its first World Championship with Jackie Stewart at thé wheel of a Matra
MS80. With thé Matra contract running out thé same year, Tyrrell décidée
1
to create his own team for thé 1970 season. While
starting thé season with a March 701 châssis, Tyrrell secretly hired Derek Gardner-who had developed thé four wheel drive
System for thé Matra MS84-to design a châssis of his own.
Gardner's first F1 machine thus became thé Tyrrell 001, which showed potential in thé nands of Jackie Stewart. For 1971, thé
car was further improved into thé Tyrrell 002 and 003.
002 and 003 are basically thé same car. The biggest différences with 001 are a 1.5 incries longer wheelbase and a 4.5 incries
longer monocoque to provide a cockpit spacious enough for François Cevert to fit his tall frame. In what was to become a
characteristic Gardner design feature, thé rear end of thé aluminum monocoque adopted a 360-degree roll hoop providing
mounting points for both thé engine and thé rear suspension
Developed in thé wind tunnel of thé University of Surrey, 001 's aerodynamic design concept adopted a fiât front end with
wings extending on both sides of thé radiator air intake which was nicknarned "hamrnerhead." Slightly différent fiberglass
cockpit cowls were made to accommodate thé différence în size and build between Jackie Stewart and François Cevert,
In search of further improved aerodynamic performance, Gardner returned to thé University of Surrey for renewed tests in thé
wind tunnel. The resuit was thé "sports car" nose which not only reduced thé drag created by thé front tires, but also helped
reduce thé front lift created by thé rotating front tires. The design shape also had thé added benefit of creating front downforce.
This nose was first seen on 003 aï thé pré-race inspection for thé Grand Prix of thé Netherlands. It was next seen at thé French
Grand Prix, tentativeiy fitted to Stewart's 003 and Cevert's 002, which went on to a one-two finish in thé race. The added
speed in thé straights being one of thé most obvious advantages, this "sports car" nose became standard from then on.
Châssis 002 was made available from thé start of thé season as François Cevert's car. While Stewart went on drive châssis
003 to thé title of World Champion, Cevert took second place in thé French and German Grand Prix, third place in Italy and
sixth place in Canada before scoring his first victory at thé last Grand Prix of thé season in thé United States, thus helping
bring Team Tyrrell thé Constructor's title.
002 was again campaigned in thé 1972 season as François Cevert's car.
