The serial interface is
used to make
communication
{data
transfer} with
information carried
on
a single
signal
line.
Serial signals carried
on
the
signal
line of the interface
should either
be
handled
in
the start/stop
or asynchronous
mode.
Parallel
signals
are
first
converted into
~rial
signals before
being
transmitted.
and
the signals
received
are
then
converted from serial
to
parallel.
In
addition to the data signal
line,
there are a
number
of
signal
lines
required for
exchang-
ing
operating status
on
sending and receiving
sides,
though
they
vary depending
on
the
device
used.
The
serial
interface
will
offer
a wide
range
of applications when used
in
conjunction
with
the
number
of peripheral
u
nits
that
are equipped
with the
RS·232C
interface,
such as:
•
Acoustic couplers that perform data commun ication via the
telephone
network,
• Printer,
•
X·Yplotter,
•
Instrument
device,
•
Personal
computef,
•
Video
display
unit.
