3.2.1 Parameters selection

First, confirm measuring parameters should suitable for
your requirements.
a) Measurement Mode.
There are two modes: Single Mode
and Continuous
Mode
. It's displayed in the upper left corner of the LCD

display.

It is usually to choose Single Mode, that is, when a
measurement is completed, you should lift the probe and
then the next point measurements. In this mode, the
measurement data can be stored automatically and
calculate mean value.
Select "Continuous Mode", you can slide the probe on
measuring surface for measurement continuously.
However, this mode will not perform the data storage and
statistical processing.
b) Measurement Units
The instrument has two kinds of units available for
selection: μm (microns) and mils (micro inch).

3.2.2 Accuracy verification

a) Using a calibration substrate and Standard thickness foil
to verificate the instrument. Generally if the

measurement

error is not out of the accuracy of specifications it can be
used normally.
Methods:
Select a Single Mode and μm, press the probe on the
surface of the substrate, push
for zeroing. Place a foil

3.2 Measuring Procedure

1 Introduction
Designed for non-destructive coating thickness
measurement, the models of the coating thickness gauge
is with built-in sensor. It works on the magnetic induction
principle and conforms to the following industrial norms
and standards: GB/T 4956, JB/T 8393, ISO 2178, ASTM
B499
The Coating Thickness Gauge is suitable for
non-destructive, quick and precise coating thickness
measurement. Easy to handle they are the ideal
1
on the substrate to measure. Comparing the measured
value and the standard value of the foil to obtain the
measurement error.
b) If the error is large, the calibration is need for, (see 5.1
Calibration).
3.2.3 Test piece ready
a) Test-piece should be ferromagnetic base material is
coated with a non-magnetic coating;
b) The measuring surface should be regular, smooth;
c) The thickness of the test piece is not less than 2mm;
d) The measuring surface should be clean and free of
grease.
3.2.4 Measurement
Press the probe perpendicular to
the surface of the test piece (Fig.
3-1).
When the thickness values is
obtained, a sound is uttered.
In Single Mode, then you can lift
the instrument to read, or do the
next measurement.
In Continuous Mode, then you
can move the probe to the next
measurement position.
Fig. 3-1
NOTE:
In Single Mode, you need to lift the
5
instrument for the finishing industry, electroplating, ship
and bridge building, aircraft construction and the
engineering and chemical industry.
The Coating Thickness Gauge works on the
1
magnetic-induction principle for measuring the thickness
2
of non-magnetic coatings(such as paint, enamel, rubber,
2
aluminum, chrome, cupper, tin etc.) on magnetic metal
2
substrates(ferrous bases and steel, also on alloyed steel or
3
on hardened magnetic steel, but not on austenitic steel or
3
3
weak magnetic steel).

instrument away from the test surface 10cm or more, and the
time interval between two measurements should be no less than
1 second.
Use Continuous Mode often, may cause the probe wear
and galling test surface is easy. We therefore recommend
to use Single Mode for normal measurements, if not
necessary.
