    The 308 USB Virtual COM Interface provides the USB interface to a rich choice of CipherLab product, such as the 1000 Series scanners, 8300 Series terminals, and so on. This product fully complies with USB 2.0 specification and supports Windows Vista/XP/Me/98se.

    H A P T E R Installing the Driver If you are using the 308 Virtual COM Interface for the first time, you must install its driver first. After that, the 308 Virtual COM Interface is a plug-and-play device for Windows Vista/XP/2000/Me/98se.

  • Page 13 If you insist on being asked to search Windows Update every time you connect a new device (as shown below), you will be guided through the driver installation by the “Found New Hardware Wizard” after you have run the pre-installer and connected the 308 Virtual COM Interface for the first time.

    Chapter 2 Installing the Driver 2.1 Run the Pre-Installer Before you run the pre-installer, make sure that there is no previous version of 308 driver available on your computer. Check whether the old 308 driver is displayed on the program list of [Change or Remove Programs] in the Control Panel.
  • Page 16 308 USB Virtual COM Interface User Guide If you are sure that no previous version of 308 driver is available on your computer, follow the steps described below to install the up-to-date driver. 1. Copy the driver package from the disk to your computer and unzip it. 2.

  • Page 21 Chapter 2 Installing the Driver 7. Wait for several seconds while installing drivers. 8. It will install “CP210x USB to UART Bridge Driver” now. If you wish to change the destination location, click [Change Install Location]. Otherwise, click [Install] to continue.
  • Page 22 308 USB Virtual COM Interface User Guide 9. Simply click [No] here. Note: The new settings will take effect whether you restart your computer or not. The wizard has successfully installed the associated drivers to your computer. Click [Finish] to exit the wizard.

    The system recognizes the new hardware – “CIPHERLAB 308 USB-to-RS-232 Interface Converter” and “CP210x USB Composite Device” (as shown below). A few seconds later, another message is displayed to inform you that the 308 Virtual COM Interface is ready for use.

    H A P T E R Removing the Driver & Setup Files Once the installation is completed, you will find the following information from the [Device Manager]: The setup files (i.e. the pre-installer) and the driver itself will be displayed on the program list of [Change or Remove Programs] in the Control Panel.
  • Page 26 308 Virtual COM User Guide If you wish to remove the whole driver package, simply select the program and click [Remove] one by one. Note: We suggest that you re-start your computer for the new settings to take effect.
