Storage Benchmark Speed Test
1. Create a 1GB test file.
2. You can do the storage benchmark speed test with an USB 3.0 external hard drive or with a
SATA hard drive.
3. We suggest the SATA hard drive should support 7200 RPM, buffer size 64 Mbytes. If you use the
Netgear installation utility to format the internal SATA hard drive, it will by default use the Ext 4
format, in a single partition.
4. Below is the example for testing with USB 3.0 external hard drive. The test with router's Internal
hard drive should be the same.
5. Partition and format your USB 3.0 external hard drive into two partitions (one is NTFS system,
the other is EXT4 file system). You can use some free partition tool, for example: MiniTool
Partition Wizard (http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html).
6. Attach this USB 3.0 external hard drive to the router.
7. Use Robocopy tool which is supported by Win7 or Vista by default. For Win XP user, please get
Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools (rktools.exe) from
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17657.
8. Please map USB 3.0 external hard drive to your PC as a network disk (for example: N drive). You
can use NTGR ReadySHARE Access utility to do it. Get it from
http://www.netgear.com/assets/landing/readyshare/ReadyShareConnect.exe.
9. Robocopy (Robust File Copy) is a command-line file copying tool, please open a Command
Prompt window (cmd.exe), for example, type "cmd" in the search bar on the start menu. To
copy contents of C:\UserFolder to N:\FolderBackup:
Robocopy C:\UserFolder N:\FolderBackup
This is the simplest usage for Robocopy
10. Upload Test: copy the 1GB file from your PC to the USB storage drive. Record the start and finish
time.
11. Download Test: copy the 1GB file from the USB storage drive to the PC. Record the start and
finish time.
12. Repeat the tests on the NTFS and EXT4 partitions of the USB external hard drive.
13. For HTTP speed test, download the file in NTFS and EXT4 system from your external drive to
your PC. Record the start and finish time.
