Getting Started With Your New Samsung GALAXY Phone
Not sure how to set up your shiny new Samsung GALAXY? We're here to help! Just
follow this setup guide and you'll be able to take advantage of everything your new
device has to offer.
Let's start with the basics.
When turning your phone on for the first time you'll be presented with the screen
below, where you will choose the default language you'd like to use with your phone.
Hit Next in the bottom right corner if you're satisfied with the language you have
selected. The next step will prompt you to set up your Wi-Fi connection; if you wish to
do so at this time, turn it on by toggling the switch in the top right corner, otherwise hit
Next to continue without configuring your Wi-Fi.

  • Page 5 During the setup process you’ll be prompted to join Google’s social media platform, Google+. We will skip this part of the process as it’s not critical to your GALAXY phone at this time. Please select Not now to proceed. You’ll also be given the option to enter your credit card information with Google Wallet if you wish.
  • Page 6 If you are unable to validate your account at this time, you have 30 days to do so to activate your Samsung account and all the features associated with it.
  • Page 7 Unique to your GALAXY Android phone, there are several features that can improve your experience when using your new smartphone from Samsung. Depending on which GALAXY phone you are using, you will have access to features such as Air gesture and Smart Screen functionality.
  • Page 8 Samsung’s Air gesture functionality provides a feature called Quick Glance, where you can wave your hand above the sensor when the phone is idle and on your desk to view your notifications. Smart Screen provides a useful feature like Smart stay where the phone screen stays on while you are looking at it, preventing the need to have to touch the screen while reading to keep it from sleeping.

Samsung makes it easy to migrate your data from your old Android or iPhone using the Samsung Smart Switch Mobile tool available in the Play Store as shown below. If you’re upgrading from another Android, please install the application on both phones and simply select the Android to Galaxy option on the old phone to proceed.
  • Page 10 After you’ve selected the Transfer option, your phones will emit a tone to connect to each other via Wi-Fi Direct (no data charges are incurred) to begin transferring the content; please select OK to proceed. You will see progress percentage for each type of content you are transferring.

If you’re upgrading from an iPhone, select the Import from iCloud option to migrate your data to your new GALAXY. Enter your iCloud credentials to see a list of your existing iCloud devices and content to migrate to your new GALAXY.

If you select the App list option, Samsung’s Smart Switch Mobile app will provide you with a list of similar applications to what was installed on your iOS device, if an exact match is not available.
  • Page 13 If you use email services such as Yahoo, Hotmail or Rogers, click the email icon on your phone’s home page to begin the setup process. Enter your full email address and your password and hit Next to continue. The email client should automatically detect your email settings and present you with the below screen asking for your email synchronization settings.
  • Page 14 Although not required, we recommend the below steps to secure your device should you ever lose it. The first step is to set up a password or PIN for your device so that if you lose it, anyone that finds it cannot easily access your private data. To set this up, please go to the Settings menu, then select the My device tab and click on Lock screen where you will be presented with the screen seen below.
  • Page 15 Upon successfully setting up your PIN, you will be returned to the Screen lock menu. The next recommended feature to enable is the Android Device Manager, which allows you to locate your phone if you lose it, as well as lock and erase your phone. To enable the feature, please go to the Settings menu and select the More tab, followed by Security.
