  • Page 6: Introduction

    1. Introduction 1.1 What is Nino®? The Nino® personal transportation robot is a new generation of electric auto-balanced seated vehicle, equipped with automatic and smart functions. The driver moves him/ herself while seated on the robot and operates it with the movements of the upper body (torso) or controls it with the aid of mobile devices such as smartphones in future versions. Nino® is proud to present the following functions: It is auto-balanced: its wheels can pivot on the spot. When driving, the operator controls the machine with the position of his/ her body instead of an accelerator and a brake, which makes steering comfortable and intuitive. The robot can balance itself automatically so that if the driver is there and leans forward, the wheels will turn forward. The wheels will turn backwards if the driver leans back. The driver can also turn right or left simply by turning the steering bar in the corresponding direction. The balance of the Nino® depends on the working efficiency of its high-speed processor, the precision of its gyroscope, and the motor. If one of these malfunctions, the machine will lose balance. Therefore, a powerful dual-backup control system is specifically provided in the Nino®—meaning that each essential circuit system in the machine is equipped with a backup system. If one essential module stops working, it will be taken over by its backup, thus maximizing safety during movement. The Nino® has a projection surface similar to that of a person and offers great handling. It can thus access the majority of areas where it is possible to walk, including trails, sidewalks, hallways, rooms, and elevators. - 6 - ® Nino user manual...

3.2 What not to do with the Nino® Do not use your Nino® in dangerous areas or contrary to the usual precautions, such as in places where there are damaged Ø pathways (potholes, etc.) or puddles more than 3 cm deep. Do not climb or descend staircases. Do not lift your Nino® off the ground when it is activated. Do not drive on emergency lanes or Ø on one wheel. Do not drive on the highway or the road. Ø Ø Do not drive with multiple people on the Nino®, especially while carrying a baby. Do not let go of the steering bar with both hands at once. Ø Do not let children under the age of 14 drive the Nino® without supervision. Driving it is also forbidden for pregnant women, people in a state of inebriation or suffering from mental disorders, cardiac diseases, or handicaps limiting their ability to drive. Do not drive the Nino® in a dangerous environment, particularly places exposed to accidents linked to fire or explosions due to Ø flammable products/liquids/dust and fibres, to gas, etc. Avoid driving in reverse at high speed or navigating tight corners in reverse. Do not use the telephone while driving. Ø Ø Do not drive in inclement weather and on roads in bad condition in the rain or freezing rain that makes the road surface slippery. Do not go against the recommendations of this manual, especially those clearly indicated with a “warning” or a “danger.” Ø 3.3 Driving modes Comport yourself in a civilized manner without entering into conflict with the people around you. Ø Ø Respect the right of way for pedestrians and avoid startling them. When you find yourself behind someone, indicate your presence and pass them on the left while reducing your speed. When you find yourself in front of someone, keep to the right while slowing down. Ø When you find yourself in a crowd, slow down and adjust your speed to match the pedestrians until a safe path allows you to pass. Driving quickly in a crowd may prove dangerous. When you are traveling with other Nino® drivers, maintain a safe distance between yourselves and keep yourself away from any Ø dangers or obstacles. Do not drive side by side unless there is enough room on your left to allow pedestrians to pass. Do not park your Nino® in a place that could block the passage of pedestrians. Ø Ø Do not drive your Nino® in an area that is insufficiently lit. If this is truly necessary, slow down, take caution, and use the headlights to make yourself noticed. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS THE DRIVER TO LEAN ON THE STEERING BAR. IT IS DANGEROUS AND IT IS ONE OF THE MAJOR CAUSES OF ACCIDENT AND INJURY BECAUSE THE NINO® MAY LOSE BALANCE, ESPECIALLY DURING ACCELERATION OR WHILE DRIVING AT A HIGH SPEED. Stay relaxed while driving, with elbows slightly bent and head straight. Driving in reverse is dangerous. Avoid this unless it is only for a Ø...
  • Page 14: Smart Safety System/Automatic Protection

Do not drive in difficult conditions if you cannot adhere to the safety advice and warnings given in this manual or if you are under the Ø influence of drugs or alcohol. Ø For your safety, do not use your Nino® and recharge it in case of insufficient battery life. The same applies in cases of repeated warnings or if the speed is limited. Please place any items that you are carrying in your backpack instead of putting them on the floor. Ø Ø Make sure that the Nino® is switched off and the kickstands are withdrawn before transport; otherwise, a rapid rotation of the wheels may cause injuries. It is recommended to transport the Nino® with two people. Do not raise it by the wing, as you may pinch your fingers. Ø Check that no screws are missing and that no part is damaged before use. Do not start the Nino® as long as these problems have not been resolved. Perform regular maintenance on your Nino® in accordance with section 7 of this manual. Ø 3.5 Smart safety system/automatic protection In the following situations, the Nino® will reduce its speed automatically to a level which will ensure your protection: Overload or prolonged handling on a slope. The smart protection will be activated and the Nino® will tilt backwards to remind the Ø driver that he/she should stop when the load on the Nino® exceeds the weight initially provided for too long. This may happen in the following cases: when prolonged parking on a steep slope is felt as an overload by the device or in case of an overweight driver. When these situations arise, the driver must exit the Nino®. The driver may fall if he/she remains on the device after more than 5 seconds of standby. Insufficient battery life. When the battery life is less than 40%, the maximum speed in balanced mode is reduced, meaning the Nino® Ø limits its speed. Insufficient battery power. If the smart safety system is activated during movement because the power level of your battery is too low Ø (generally below 10%), you must deploy the kickstands in parking mode immediately and recharge the Nino®. In this case, the floor will position itself so as to force the driver to stop if he/she continues to move. - 14 - ® Nino user manual...
  • Page 15 Internal default. The Nino®’s smart safety mode detects any internal default (such as a loss of power in the battery or a rupture of a Ø balance sensor unit). If the driver is still driving the Nino® when this happens, he/she must stop the Nino® and contact customer service to have it repaired. If you hear the alarm just after turning on the ignition, then that may indicate that the battery is not sufficiently charged. In this case, recharge it. If you have installed the application Ninedroid on your smartphone (free application), you can use the “smart diagnostics” function on the application to determine what the problem is and how to resolve it. If the problem persists, please send an email as soon as possible to our customer service team : info@nino-robotics.com The specific error code with the key icon appears on the dashboard of the application. • Page 21: Braking

For a beginner, it is necessary to act slowly and gently. The posture of your body should be relaxed in order to avoid swaying. Overly abrupt back-and-forth movements can make the wheels slip or cause a loss of control. This is very dangerous and should be avoided. Tilt your chest and shoulders slightly backwards to brake and reverse the Nino® progressively. Then return to your initial position to Ø sense the deceleration and stop the machine. Repeat the movement several times and avoid falling or striking a wall or any other obstacle. Driving in reverse is dangerous. It should not be a normal form of driving. Only do it for a distance of less than one meter. It is preferable to turn and continue forward. If you drive backwards at an excessive speed, the Nino® will begin to shake and an alarm signal will sound. 4.6 Braking If you move your centre of gravity in the opposite direction from where you are driving, you will be able to stop your Nino®. To do this, proceed in the following manner. When you are advancing forward, lean your chest and shoulders backwards. This will stop the Nino®. Find a spot or take a few laps and train yourself to stop while maintaining balance. - 21 - ® Nino user manual...
  • Page 22: Turning

Try to stop the Nino® in a moderate and progressive fashion rather than abruptly. Move the weight of your body slowly in the direction of travel so that the Nino® stops smoothly. On asphalt-type surfaces, the emergency braking distance when the Nino® is moving rapidly is 4 meters. Never accelerate or brake suddenly on a wet or slippery road because that may cause the wheels to slip, leading to an accident and causing injuries. 4.7 Turning When you tilt the navigation bar to the left or right, the Nino® turns in the corresponding direction. Teach yourself to turn. Turn slowly in the direction you desire. Repeat these movements until you have mastered the technique. Train yourself to make turns on the spot once you have familiarized yourself with driving forwards and backwards and braking. Tilt the bar in the direction you wish to turn. The angle should be the same as that of the steering bar. Make several attempts in order to master the technique. Whether you are stopped or in motion, never turn abruptly. Your body can lose balance. Consequently, when you plan to turn, slow down and lean your body in the desired direction so as to improve your stability.

Ask your instructor to help you to get out one step at a time and to hold the navigation bar (except for people in wheelchairs). Furthermore, for 15 seconds, the kickstands can be activated even if the Nino® is turned off (to allow you to store it in the dedicated flycase). To get down from the Nino: Push the lateral button to extend the kickstand downwards. Do not touch the remote control because the device will automatically enter standby mode after the kickstands have been activated. Remove the central bar and exit by the front of the vehicle or lower the armrests and exit out the side. Turn off the machine with the remote control and the OFF button. 4.8 Assisted power Once you have gotten off the Nino® and after having remounted the electronic kickstands, it will return from balanced mode to assisted power mode. Accordingly, the Nino® will advance/reverse or slightly turn according to your movement of the steering bar. Switch to assisted power to bypass sidewalks, bumps, stairs, or dangerous or unsuitable terrain along the side of the road. - 23 - ® Nino user manual...

  • Page 25: Introduction To The Different Operating Modes

4.10 Introduction to the different operating modes The Nino® offers the following operating modes (Status): Off mode: In “off mode,” all the electronic control systems are stopped. Only the remote key remains functional in order to Ø start up the device again. Standby mode: the Nino® is on, but it does not maintain balance by itself. In standby mode, the majority of systems are Ø activated, but the motor control system is resting, although it can be activated every now and then if necessary. Balanced mode: the Nino® balances itself and all systems are operating at full power. This state assumes the presence of a Ø person on the device or close to it and with a limited speed. 4.11 Getting to know the remote and in-dash key systems The appearance of the remote key and the functions of its different buttons are described in the following table. You may carry it on the keychain provided by us so you do not lose it. On the remote key, you will find four buttons defined in the table below: Ignition ; Locking; Information ; Passage at limited speed . Each of these buttons may be activated in two ways—namely, by a long pressure, which lasts more than 1.5 seconds, and by a short pressure, which lasts less than 1.5 seconds. - 25 - ® Nino user manual...

  • Page 31: Battery Transport And Maintenance

6.2 Battery transport and maintenance The battery on the Nino® demands the greatest attention. A well-maintained battery can ensure optimal performance, even after a 20 or 30,000 km trip, whereas if you neglect it, it can function well below its abilities or become damaged after only a few months. In order to prolong the life of your battery, you must perform the maintenance and verifications according to the following recommendations: Read the recommendations on the label of the battery closely. Keep the battery in a dry environment where the temperature is between 0°C and 40°C. Using or storing the battery in a very high temperature environment (above 50°C) or in a very low temperature (below -20°C) will affect its lifespan. Try to store your battery in a cool and dry environment. In an extremely humid environment, the dew or the water may infiltrate the battery, quickly leading to damages. If a humid environment is unavoidable, store it in an airtight bag. Do not use the full capacity of the battery and recharge it daily, but do so when there is still 10%-20% power remaining. Recharge the battery each time you have finished using your Nino®. Frequent recharging will not affect its performance or its longevity, but using it until it is totally drained certainly will. If the battery is mounted on the Nino, the receptor on the remote control will continue to consume energy. In addition: It is not necessary to take out the battery when the period of non-use of the Nino® does not exceed 30 days, but remember to completely recharge the battery before storing it. Completely recharge the battery, take it out, and store it in a cool and dry place if you don’t expect to use your Nino® for a period longer than 30 days. When the battery must be stored for a very long period (more than 180 days), recharge it every 5 or 6 months in order to conserve its capacity and its lifespan. Remember to recharge the battery after each trip. Using the battery until it is completely drained may cause irreversible damages that are not covered under the warranty. - 31 - ®...
  • Page 32: Checking For Loose Screws

The battery on the Nino® is equipped with ion cells with various protective functions. It is the holder of the UN38.3 aerial transportation certificate, the drop test certificate at 1.5, and the UL certificate. Fire, explosion, or shocks will not occur during normal use, but as a precautionary measure, do not penetrate the battery with a pointed object, do not strike it with heavy objects, and do not expose it to fire or water, which could put you in danger or pollute the environment. Most airline companies or express delivery companies such as UPS, DHL, and TNT can deliver the battery to you by airplane on the condition that you present them with the UN38.3 test report and the other compliance tests. These documents can be downloaded from our official website in the “support & service” section. You may also obtain a copy of these documents from the customer service department of your retailer. However, we cannot guarantee that all express delivery companies will agree to transport the Nino®’s battery, since their decisions may be affected by changes in aerial transportation rules and by the security regulations of different countries, airlines, or airports. 6.3 Checking for loose screws Thanks to a special treatment, all the screws on the Nino® are designed so as not to loosen, but as a safety measure, perform a verification of the screws on the rims, on the steering bar, on the battery, on the wing, on the floor, on the dashboard, etc., or have this done at one of our stores. Shake these components yourself to see if they move or if they emit sounds that could indicate that they are loose. If this is the case, tighten them with the tools provided with the product. 6.4 Checking tire pressure Under normal conditions, the pressure of the tires should be kept between 10 PSI and 15 PSI (70-100 kPa). Tire pressure should not exceed 25 PSI (170 kPa). Overly high tire pressure many diminish their resistance to friction, prolonging the number of kilometers but perhaps altering the effect of the shocks, whereas a low tire pressure will reduce the number of kilometers ensured by the battery, but will suit steep roads. Each of these two cases may accelerate wear and tear on the tires. - 32 - ® Nino user manual...
