  • Page 3: Say Hello To Eddie

That is the goal of EVOKE loudspeakers. To inspire you to listen to your music or watch a film as if for the first time. To hear it as if it were live in the moment.
  • Page 4: Rear Panel

Rear Panel The port and control panels are on the back of EDDIE. It is imperative that the port is at least 12” from the back wall for optimum bass performance. There are midrange and tweeter level controls. They are preset during the burn-in at the factory. At 12 O’clock, EDDIE is set for flat response. Depending on the acoustics of your room or personal taste you may want to adjust them. Counter clockwise lowers output. Clockwise increases output. The left speaker binding post is for the positive (+) lead of your amplifier. The right speaker binding post is for the negative (-) lead of your amplifier. NEVER connect or disconnect these leads with the amplifier turned on. You can find your serial number in the lower right corner. After the # sign, the serial number of this speaker would be “EDDIE 0000”. Your speaker will have a number other than “0000”.

Electronics Overall Component Quality EDDIE is one of the finest loudspeakers made. You and EDDIE deserve supporting audio components of the highest quality. Audio systems are highly synergistic - excellent sound quality in any one component can raise the overall performance of the total system, while poorer quality can seem to diminish the overall result more than you would expect. Choose your other system components with the same care you have devoted to selecting EDDIE. As a general rule avoid receivers or low-priced multi- channel amplifiers. Generally separate pre-amps and power amps are your best choice. Minimum Power Requirements While you can use as little as 50 watts per channel, EDDIE operates best 100 watts per channel that is stable into a 4-ohm load. Some users will find these minimums insufficient, while others will wonder why anyone would need larger amplifiers. Your listening habits, the size and acoustics of your listening room, and your personal views will determine how much power you need. Maximum power As a practical matter, if used in a room matched to EDDIE, you can use larger amplifiers and hear the performance difference. In development, EDDIE was tested with amplifiers producing over250 watts per channel. The additional power will yield immediate dividends in dynamic range and clarity. With any amp, be aware that EDDIE has his limits. A small amp may clip and burn the woofers voice coil or melt the planar or ribbon. Too large a signal and you will first hear the woofer complain. This may be due to the amplifiers inability to provide proper damping. The woofer in EDDIE does extend to 32 Hz and in the right room may go lower. But it is not designed to do the job of a subwoofer. For specific electronics recommendations and optimum room sizes speak with your EVOKE EDDIE representative.
  • Page 6: Cables

Cables Wiring System cables, wiring, and connectors have come to occupy a central position in audiophile discussions about sound quality. We make no recommendations about specifics of cables and interconnects, except to note that the power transfer between the amplifiers and speakers should be as efficient as possible. This means using heavy gauge, low impedance speaker cables. There is no substitute for personal experience in the selection of audio components, and nowhere is this truer than in choosing cables and interconnects. Cable Lengths Please do not cut or order any cables to a finished length until you have determined the exact locations for all of your components. Cables that are too long rarely create problems (except for vastly too-long speaker cables), but cables that are too short are one of life’s sharper irritations. For specific interconnect recommendations speak with your EVOKE representative.
  • Page 7: Sources

Sources EDDIE was carefully designed to sound great with most sources. This is not a compromise in design – but rather the result of very careful design. There are 3 types of performance you can expect from EDDIE – Ecstasy, amazement and disgust. With reference materials, EDDIE will open a world of detail you may have never experienced. Well-mixed CDs, Vinyl and FLAC files are good places to start. Some of the Pandora stations with newer material are very satisfying. If you’ve gone to a movie and been disappointed that it was just loud – you’ll love EDDIE. In testing, films prove very satisfying belying the idea that you need different speakers for music and film. So much for that theory! Then there are those sources that are just plain bad. We don’t mean a record with some dust or a few scratches. It is because EDDIE has excellent phase response and if your source was mixed poorly, compressed or rolled off at the low or high end, EDDIE will let you know. Any source can be poorly produced as easily as it can be exceptional. There is one exception. If you have amassed a huge collection of MP3 files, and many people have, you will most likely found the quality to be poor. MP3 files are compressed into small data files. That’s why your iOS or Android device can hold so many tracks. While these files will never compare with audiophile sources there is a way to make them sound better so as not to throw away a large collection. One option is to visit the iOS or Android store and install an equalizer. Do some research for the best plug-ins. Carefully find a curve that you can name EDDIE. And remember to have your pre-amp volume low before you plug in your device! Another option is to purchase a “dock” with an onboard DAC where you can plug in your iOS or Android mobile device. This will provide for the best sound quality possible. For specific content recommendations speak with your EVOKE EDDIE representative.
  • Page 8: Break In

Break In During production every component for EDDIE is hand-selected. Drivers must perform within parameters to match the production sample both electrically and sonically. Crossovers are tested before installation. Each driver is tested prior to installation. And when the speaker is complete it has a thorough visual check to make sure EDDIE is looking good. But that’s not enough. He has to perform. EDDIE goes through rigorous testing to assure it matches the production sample. Then there are music tests. A variety of music is tested at various output levels. This is part of the factory break-in. This is where the midrange and tweeter level controls are set for flat response. Finally, the ultimate reference is a trained ear. Besides specifications EDDIE musty pass real- world listening. When you receive EDDIE, you should begin lower listening levels progressing to higher listening levels. After about 50 hours of use you will be hearing EDDIE at his best. (Please review sections 5 and 12 before you continue break in.) During this period, you can experiment with optimal placement and treatment of your listening environment. (See Section 10.) If you require any help – please contact EVOKE or your representative.
  • Page 9: Stereo Speaker Placement

Stereo Speaker Placement Following a few rules when placing EDDIE will deliver great performance. Toe in the speakers toward the main listening position. EDDIE should be 2 - 3 feet away from the back and sidewalls and be 6 to 8 feet apart. Following is how to set your listening distance: A 1 to 1 ratio is where your distance to the speakers is the same distance as the speakers are apart. This is the most engaging performance – a true near-field monitor experience. A 1 to 1.5 ratio is similar to the mixing position recording artists use in mixing THX sound tracks for movies. 1 to 2 ratios are for a larger stage presentation. All of these positions are personal preference. Please note that your listening position should be 6 – 8 feet away from the back wall. 8-foot or flat ceilings cause the most bass problems. So if you have higher or vaulted ceilings, EDDIE will perform better. Acoustic treatments between the speakers, on the side and rear walls will help eliminate reflections. The speaker stand is acoustically important. It provides a front baffle and anchors EDDIE to the floor for optimum bass performance. EVOKE offers a matching stand* for EDDIE. * Available late 2016.
  • Page 10: Use In Home Theater

Use in Home Theater Image Courtesy of Dolby™ EDDIE performs well in home theater situations. You can use EDDIE for Left, Center and Right. EVOKE will also be offering a matching low profile center channel for EDDIE and all future EVOKE products. Additionally, EVOKE will be offering a small monitor ideal for desk top listening and surround sound applications with its convenient VESA mount. Set-ups vary due to your budget, commitment and size of your room. You will minimally need 3 front speakers, 2 sides and an LFE Subwoofer. This is known as a 5.1 system. Add 1 extra pair of speakers to the rear wall and 1 pair of speakers to the ceiling and you have a DOLBY ATMOS 7.1.2 system. If your room is deep enough, you may need 2 additional side speakers, and 2 additional speakers on the ceiling. This is perfect when you have 2 rows of seating. This would be a DOLBY ATMOS 9.1.4 system. The middle number refers to the number of subs. You may want stereo subs up front and possibly a rear room sub. That would be a DOLBY ATMOS 9.3.4 system. If you have the space and budget for a 9.3.4 system, you may wish to consider one of EDDIE’s bigger brothers for the left and right mains.
  • Page 11 Precautions EDDIE is a high performance reproduction device. It is comprised of some of the best components available. That doesn’t mean that EDDIE is invulnerable to failure. Always make connections with electronics OFF. When changing between devices have the audio volume low. Listen to individual tracks to establish a listening level. Not all recordings have the same output. If you listen to MP3’s be very cautious if you use a built-in EQ or plugin on your Apple or Android devices. You should not need any EQ with quality sources such as CDs, FLAC files or Vinyl. (Some Pandora channels in Hi-Res are exceptionally good!) Section 5 details matching electronics. But to restate, a receiver or inexpensive multi- channel amp is not as good as a stereo amplifier or mono-blocks with a dedicated preamp. Additionally, EDDIE presents a true 4-ohm load. A good damping factor and low impedance stability is required. Less than an optimal amp may may lead to clipping and cause damage occur to the voice coil or damage the planar and ribbon. Most of all, take time to get to know EDDIE. You’ll have a great long-term relationship as you grow to know each other. Care EDDIE should be kept dust free - simply wipe the enclosures’ finished surfaces with a soft, clean, lint- free cloth on a regular basis. Remove the cloth grilles covering the speakers and vacuum them with a dust brush attachment. Do not vacuum while on the enclosure. The front grille cloth may be lightly brushed to remove dust. Do not vacuum the drivers on the front baffle ever!
