When you hit play the turntable starts rotating then stops. If you help it along for a couple revolutions, then it plays fine.

The Bang & Olufsen Beogram 1800 turntable starting and then stopping when trying to play could be caused by one or more of the following issues:

1. Drive Belt Issues: The rubber belt that connects the motor to the platter may be worn out, stretched, or broken. A faulty belt can cause the platter to fail to spin properly, leading the turntable to stop shortly after starting.

2. Sensor or Auto-Stop Malfunction: The turntable has sensors to detect record size and tonearm position. If these sensors are dirty or malfunctioning, the system may think there is no record or the tonearm is at the end, triggering an automatic stop.

3. Tonearm Mechanism Problems: If the tonearm does not move properly or fails to reach the correct position, the turntable may stop automatically. Mechanical binding or dried-out lubrication can cause this.

4. Power Supply or Electronic Fault: Faults in the power supply, capacitors, or control circuitry can cause unstable operation, leading the unit to shut off unexpectedly.

5. Incorrect Operation or Settings: If the turntable is not set correctly for the record size or speed, or if the start procedure is not followed properly, it may start and then stop.

Each of these issues would need to be checked to identify the exact cause.
