Enterprise Systems Connection Architecture
A set of products and services that provides a dynami-
cally connected environment using fiber optics as a
transmission medium.
ESCON channels.
Enterprise Systems Connection Architecture. ESCON
provides significant benefits beyond parallel (OEMI)
channels, such as increased channel-to-control unit
distances, smaller and lighter cables, built-in channel-
to-channel adapter (CTC) capability, and enhanced
switching via the ESCON Director and ESCON Manager.
ESCON 17 MB/sec.
This item identifies processor models that support
ESCON channels at speeds up to 17 MB/second. Sup-
port for the 17 MB/sec speed is provided by 3990
cache hits, the RAMAC
®
DASD subsystem, and ESCON channel-to-channel
(CTC) operations.
Frame.
For a S/390 microprocessor complex, a frame contains
either one CPC cage or one I/O or Internal Disk cage.
Hard Disk Drive.
Platters of storage media with an arm-like device to
read the data.
Hardware Management Console.
A console used by the operator to monitor and control
a central electronic complex (CEC).
Hot Swap.
The replacing of a part (field replaceable unit) with a
good spare while the system is powered on and function-
ing. Most often referred to during replacement of an HDD.
Integrated Coupling Migration Facility (ICMF).
The Integrated Coupling Migration Facility (ICMF) pro-
vides a Coupling Facility capability that can assist with
the testing of/migration to a Parallel Sysplex environ-
ment. ICMF runs in a PR/SM LPAR and provides the

(ESCON).
Array Subsystem, the 9340
function of a Coupling Facility. PR/SM emulates the
function of coupling.
Links to connect OS/390 images in that processor to
the LPAR running ICMF. Participating OS/390 images
must be running in LPAR mode in the same processor
as the ICMF LPAR.
Integrated Facility for Linux
This optional facility enables you to purchase additional
processing capacity exclusively for Linux workloads,
with no effect on the processor model designation. For
example, a Multiprise 3000 model H30, with additional
workspace added by the IBM Integrated Facility for
Linux, will still report its S/390 capacity as a model H30.
Consequently, executing Linux workload on the IBM
Integrated Facility for Linux often will not result in any
increased IBM software charges for z/OS, OS/390
VSE, or TPF operating systems / applications. Moreover,
your independent software vendor (ISV) who provides
S/390 applications to you, may be among those ISVs
who have adopted this policy for the hardware
workspace dedicated to Linux.
Integrated LAN Adapter.
This feature provides a direct attachment of LANs to the
processor. LAN protocols supported include Token-Ring,
and Fast Ethernet. Integrated LAN Adapter is a single card
which can be plugged into the PCI slot of Multiprise 3000.
Integrated WAN Adapter.
This feature provides a direct attachment of WANs to
the processor. Supported interfaces are RS232, V35 and
X21. Integrated WAN adapter is a single card which can
be plugged into the PCI slot of Multiprise 3000.
Internal Disk Fast Write.
The ending status for each write is given as soon as all the
data is received in the HDD buffer memory. Data is moved
asynchronously from the buffer to the disk, reducing the
wait time of the SAP/processor associated with the data.
