PLANING AN UNEVEN BOARD
The fitting edge of a door, screen, storm window, or other workpiece with a long
edge may not be straight. Mark a straight line carefully with a pencil and notice
where the most material must be removed. With the depth adjusting knob set
at "0", start the plane well behind the high spot. As the plane moves into the
high spot, rotate the knob to cut deeper. When the high spot is passed, reverse
the rotation of the knob. Carefully work the length of board or door edge to the
pencil line. Use this method to accomplish a true fit, provided the bow or bend
is not too great. Work the high spots by cutting only 1/64" of material with each
pass to achieve a straight edge on uneven boards.
RABBETING
To make rabbet cuts, adjust the blades so that the right end of both blades
is even with the right side of the front shoe. Slightly loosen the clamp screws
(A) Fig. 7, and use a wood block to slide and align the blade (in pressure bar
assembly). Tighten the clamp screws securely. Repeat for a second blade.
These blades are very sharp. Use care while adjusting them.
Prevent the pressure bars from protruding beyond either end of the cutter
head.
Loosen the knob (A) Fig. 8. Adjust the depth stop. The desired depth of the
finished rabbet should be equal to the distance from its bottom surface (B)
Fig. 8 to the bottom of the rear shoe (C) Fig. 8 (7/8" maximum). Adjust the
fence to expose a portion of the cutter equal to the width of the desired
rabbet. Set the depth adjustment knob to the depth of cut desired in each
pass (1/8" maximum).
Hold the plane correctly (Fig. 6) and start the motor. Hold the plane shoe and
fence firmly against the work. Allow the cutter to achieve full speed before
starting the cut. Place the pressure on the front shoe. After the cutter has
entered the work, and the rear shoe is on the work, transfer the pressure to
the rear shoe. Let the plane follow through until the cutter has cleared the
work. Lift the plane and release the switch trigger. Do not relax pressure
on the rear shoe at the end of the cut. Repeat the cut until the depth stop
touches the workpiece.
