The valvemust be marked with a maximum set pressure not
to exceed the marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the
water heater (150 IbsJsq.in.) and a dischargecapEt'm/nut
lessthan the water heater input rate as shownon the model
rating plate. (Electric heaters - watts dividedby 1000x 3415
equal BTU/Hr. rate.)

anthorit_ whilemandating the useof a
temperature-pressure relief valvecomplying with ANSI Z21.22
andASME,may requirea valvemodeldifferent fromthe onefur-
nished withthe waterhe,_er.
Compliance with suchlocalrequirements must be satisfied by
the installeror end userof the water heaterwith a locally pre-
scribed temperature-pressure reliefvalveinstalledin the desig-
nated openingin the water heater in placeof the factory fur-
nished valve.
For safeoperation of the water heater, t he reliefvalvemustnot
be removedfrom it'sdesignated opening or plugged.
The temperature-pressure reliefvalvemustbe installed directly
intothe fittingofthe water heaterdesignated f ur the reliefvabe.
Positionthe valvedownwardand providetubingsothat anydis-
chargewill exit onlywithin 6 inches above,or at any distance
belowthe structuralfloor.Be certainthat no contact ismade
with anyliveelectricalpart. The discharge o peningmust not be
blockedor reducedin size underany circumstances. Excessive
length,over30 feet, or useof more than fourelbowscan cause
restriction and reduce the discharge c apacity ofthe valve.
No valveor other obstruction isto be placedbetweenthe relief
valveand the tank. Do not connecttubingdirectlyto discharge
drain unless a 6" air gap is provided. To preventbodilyinjury,
hazard to life, or property damage, the relief valve must be
allowedto discharge water in quantitiesshouldcircumstances
demand. If the discharge pipe is not connectedto a drain or
other suitable means, the water flow may causeproperty
damage.
The DischargePipe:
• Must nnt be smallerin sizethan the outlet pipe sizeof the
valve,or haveanyreducingcouplings or other restrictions.
• Must not be pluggedor blocked.
• Must be of material listedfor hot water distribution.
• Must be installedso as to allow complete drainageof buth
the temperature-pressurerelief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
Must terminate at an adequatedrain.
[_ Mustnot haveanyvalvebetween the relief valveandtank.
AWARNING
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually
operated at least once a year. Caution shouldbe taken to I
ensure that (I) no one is in from: of or around the outlet
of the temperature-pressure relief valve discharge line,
md (2) the water manually dischargedwill not causeany
)odily iniuP / or property damage becausethe water may
)e extremely hot.
If after manually operating the valve, it failsto completely
reset and continues to release water, immediately, close
the cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the drain-
ing instructions, and replace the temperature-pressure
relief valve with a new one.
