Punch-in/out procedure

Preliminary
"Punc hing in" or "insert recording" is w hen you record over a small
section of a previously recorded track in order to fix a mistak e or
improve a performance, w hile k eeping the rest of the trac k as before.
The mixer settings should be exactly the sam e as they w ere during
the original recording.
The 488 c an manually punch-in w ith the RECORD (•) k ey, the RECORD
FUNCTION sw itches, or the optional RC-3 0 P footsw itch.
This function is activated by pressing the RH SL sw itch. It s L ED w ill
start blinking. During a rehearsal, w hat you hear in the monitor mix
and read on the TRACK level meters will be the sam e as during
recording, but signal won't be recorded on tape. The playback is
simply muted w hile RECORD is on.
You c an rehearse your punch-in as m any times as you need w ithout
affecting the existing recording at all. When you are sure of your
performanc e and ready to actually record the insert, turn off the RH SL
L ED by pressing the sw itch again.
The 488 offers 3 w ays to initiate the punch-in. The first is w ith the
transport RECORD k ey, the sec ond w ith the trac k RECORD FUNCTION
sw itch, and the third with the remote foot sw itch.
In the follow ing, w e'll use trac k 2 as the punch-in trac k as an example.
1. As the punch-in track is track 2 in our example, your input needs
to be assigned to GROU P 2. To do so, turn the PA N control in the
channel w hich your sourc e instrument is plugged into, all the w ay
to the right (EVEN), and press the channel's 1/L-2/R ASSIGN
sw itch.
K eep all the other channels' ASSIGN sw itches off.
2. To hear the tape, the CU E signal path is used. So, turn eac h T A PE
control to the right of center (CU E side) and press the CU E sw itch
in the MONITOR sw itch rac k .
3. To hear the instrument press the MONITOR GROU P 2 sw itch.
4. Press PL A Y t o play the tape, then adjust the CU E MASTER control
until the MONITOR level meters peak at about 0 to +3, and adjust
the PHONES control for the desired listening level of the
headphones.
5. Play the instrument. You'll hear it together w ith the tape signals in
the headphones. Stopping the tape will allow you to hear only
the instrument.
