You will find that your hp Jornada is also the perfect companion to your desktop or notebook PC, allowing you to take vital business data and documents with you and easily upload updated information upon returning to your desk.

    Follow these steps to begin using your hp Jornada: 1. Install the main battery. Align the main battery with the slots on the back of your hp Jornada, and slide until it locks in place. 2. Install the backup battery. The CR-2032 coin-cell backup battery is attached to the Quick Start Card.

    The backup battery does not provide enough power to operate your hp Jornada, but it will preserve your data for up to 1 day after the low main battery warning is displayed. Connect to ac power to recharge the main battery.

    If you will not be using your hp Jornada for an extended period of time, be sure to charge the main battery fully (or connect to ac power) before you store your hp Jornada.

    Press the up/down control to scroll through documents or to highlight items in a list. Record Button Press and hold the record button to turn on your hp Jornada and begin recording a voice note. If the speaker is not muted, a beep indicates that recording has started.

    Avoid spraying the screen directly. Be sure to turn off your hp Jornada before cleaning the touch screen. If your hp Jornada is set to power on when you tap the screen, change this setting before you clean the touch screen.

If you add writing to a word to change it (such as changing a “3” to an “8”) after you attempt to recognize the word, the writing you add will not be included if you attempt to recognize the writing again.

    Connecting to Your Desktop PC To get the most from your hp Jornada, you will want to connect to your desktop or notebook PC. This chapter describes how to establish the connection between your hp Jornada and your desktop PC, and how to synchronize and transfer files between your hp Jornada and your desktop (or any PC that has Microsoft ActiveSync installed).

    Jornada in the cradle when you are not carrying it with you, so it is always charged, synchronized, and ready to go. Do not shut down or restart your desktop PC while your hp Jornada is connected. Turn off your hp Jornada or remove it from the cradle before you shut down your desktop PC.

When you create a new dial-up connection, select Generic IrDA modem from the modem list.

You will need to synchronize with your desktop PC again to download the page to your hp Jornada, or connect to the Internet to view the page.

    6 | Configuring and Optimizing This chapter details ways you can optimize your hp Jornada using the Settings and the hp settings application, and describes ways you can expand features and functionality by adding programs. This chapter also offers important tips on safeguarding your data by managing power and memory and using the security settings.

    Data stored in the hp safe store folder or on a CompactFlash card will be saved, even if your hp Jornada loses power. To protect your data, use hp backup to back up regularly to the hp safe store folder or to a CompactFlash card.
  • Page 83 Suspend frequently. Use the Power control panel to shorten the length of continuous idle time before your hp Jornada auto-suspends. Press the power button to turn off your hp Jornada when it is not in use, even for a short time.

    The hp safe store folder The hp safe store folder uses nonvolatile memory; that is, it will not be erased if your hp Jornada loses power. The hp safe store folder contains several preinstalled programs, as well as available storage space that you can use to store your most important files or as a location for your backup file.

    Your hp Jornada comes with three programs for backing up data: Microsoft ActiveSync. ActiveSync enables you to back up data to your desktop PC. You can back up all data on your hp Jornada, or only your PIM databases (Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks). You can set ActiveSync to back up automatically each time you connect, or you can back up manually, whenever you choose.

  • Page 89 The backup file is protected even if your hp Jornada loses power or if you reset the factory defaults. You do not need to carry a removable storage card or connect to your desktop PC to back up and restore the file.

    If you are in a dark room, you can use the backlight to compensate for the low ambient light. Your hp Jornada includes a light sensor. You can set an option to turn on the backlight automatically whenever the light sensor detects that conditions are too dim to see the screen clearly.

    (for example, indoors or low power). Display profiles remember all of the display options for brightness and backlight. The display settings are shown by default when you start hp settings.
