Installation and Connections
System Installation
After unpackingthe unitr and placingit on a
solid surfacecapableof supportingits weightr
yOU will needto makethe connections to your
audio andvideo equipment. T hesestepsneed
to be done onlywhen the receiverisfirst
installed,or when a changeis madeto the
input sourceequipment
Audio Equipment Connections
We recommendthat you usehigh-quality inter-
connectcableswhen making connections to
sourceequipmentand recorders to presewethe
quality of the signals
When makingconnections to audiosource
equipmentor speakers it is alwaysa good prac-
tice to unplug the unit from the AC wall outlet
This prevents any possibilityof accidentally
sendingaudio or transientsignalsto the speak-
ers that may damagethem,
1, Connectthe analog output of a CD playerto
the CD inputsI_,
NOTE: Whenthe CDplayerhasboth fixed and
variableaudio outputs,it is best to usethe
fixed output unlessyou find that the input to
the receiveris so low that the soundis noisy,or
so high that the signal is distorted
2, Connectthe Play/Out j acks of a cassette
deck, MD or otheraudio recorderto the Tape
Monitor In jacks _). Connectthe Record/In
jacks on the recorder to the Tape Monitor
Out jacks t_) on the NK 3370 Whenthe tape
deck connected to thesejacks is a three-head
unit or hasoff-headplayback,it will be possible
to monitor the output of the sourcebeing
recorded,
3, Connectthe output of a secondaudio
recorder, V CRor otherline-levelaudiodeviceto
the Tape 2 Play/In jacks G) If a recorderis
used,connectitsRec/In jacksto the matching
outputs _,
4. Theoutput of any electronicsproductwith a
line-leveloutput, suchasa TVset, satellite
receiveror DVD,maybe connected to the Aux
jacksO,
5, Connectthe outputsof a turntable with a
moving magnetcartridgeto the Phono inputs
I_) Toinsurethat the phonoplaybackisnoise-
free, connectthe ground wire from the tone
arm to the Phono Ground terminal I_,
6, Assemblethe AM LoopAntennasupplied
with the unit asshown below Connectit to the
AM screwterminalsO,
7, Connectan FMantennato the FM
(75 ohm) connectionO TheFM antenna
powered
or wire lead antenna
or a connection

cable,you must usethe 300-ohm-to-75-ohm
adapter suppliedwith the unit to makethe
connection,
Speaker and Output Connections
lo assurethat all the audio signalsare carried
to your speakers without lossof clarityor reso-
lution,we suggestthat you usehigh-quality
speakercable Many brandsof cable are avail-
able,and the choice of cablemay be influenced
by the distancebetweenyourspeakersandthis
receiveuthe type of speakers you use,personal
preferences and otherfactors.Yourdealeror
installerisa valuableresource to consultin
selectingthe proper cable
Regardless o f the brandof cableselected,we
recommendthat you usea cable constructedof
fine, multistrandcopperwith a gaugeof 14 or
sma]lerRemember t hat in specifyingcable,the
lower the numbecthe thickerthe cable
Cablewith a gaugeof 16 may be usedfor
short runsof lessthan ten feet We do not rec-
ommendthat you use cableswith an AWG
equivalentof 18 or higherdue to the power
lossand degradationin performance that will

Cablesthat are run insidewalls shouldhave
the appropriatemarkingsto indicatelisting
with UL,CSAor other appropriatetesting
agencystandardsQuestionsabout running
cablesinsidewalls should be referredto your
installeror a licensedelectricalcontractorwho
is familiarwith the NECand/orthe applicable
localbuilding codesin your area,
Whenconnectingwiresto the speakers,
be certainto observeproper polarity.
Remember t o connectthe "negative" or
"black" wire to the sameterminalon the
receiverandthe speakerSimilarly, t he "posi-
tive" or "red" wire shouldbe connectedto the
liketerminal on the HK 3370 and speaker
Wealso recommendthat the length of cable
usedto connectspeakerpairsbe identical.For
example, u sethe samelength pieceof cableto
connectthe front left and front right or sur-
roundleft andsurroundright speakem, e venif
the speakersarea different distancefrom the
FIK3370,
NOTE: While most speakermanufacturers
adhereto an industiy conventionof using black
terminalsfor negativeand red onesfor positive,
somemanufacturersmayvaiy from this config-
uration,Toassureproperphase,and optimal
performance, consultthe identificationplateon
your speaker, o r the speaker'smanualto verify
polarity If you do not know the polarity
of your speakeu askyour dea]erfor
advicebeforeproceeding, o r consult
the speaker'smanufacturet
Connectthe speakers using the following steps:
1, Connect t he mainspeakers t o the Speaker 1
terminals_,
2, Connecta secondset of speakers, or speakers
that are in a secondroomlocation,to the
Speaker 2 terminals_)
3,When an optional, poweredsubwooferis
used,connectthe outputsof the Subwoofer
Out jacks _ to the line-levelinputs of the
subwooferWhenthe subwoofer'samplifierhas
stereoinputs,run interconnectsfrom both
jacks,Whenthe subwooferhas a mono input
only,usethe bottomjack for the connection.
Whena passive subwoofer is used,thesecon-
nectionswill be madeto the optional ampIFier
that powersthe subwoofer
