Timing is important in recording this message.The messagesets up the waysto
handle both manual and automatic fax reception.
1 Record 5 secondsofsilence at the beginning of your message. (This allows
your fax machine time to listen for the fax CNGtones of automatic
transmissionsbeforetheystop.)
2 Limityourspeaking to 20seconds.

Endyour 20-secondmessage by givingyour RemoteActivationCodefor
peoplesending manual faxes. For example:
"Afterthe beep,leave a messageor send a fax bypressing * 5 1."
Connecting
an External
Telephone
Yourfax machine is equippedwith a handset that youcan use as a regular
phone. However, y ou can also connect a separate telephone (or telephone
answeringdevice)directlyto your fax machine.
Connectthe modular plug on the telephone's line cord to the jack labeled EXT.
on the left sideofthe fax machine.
Wheneverthis phone (or TAD)is in use, the screen displays"EXT. T ELINUSE,"
and, if the fax handset is lifted, an alarm sounds.Todisconnect the call on the
external phone and switchto the fax, pressl-ffG-_.
