Switch - Ensure ON/STOP
switch functions properly bypressing
and holding the switch i ntheSTOP
position. Make s ure engine stops;
then restart engine and continue.
• Fuel Tank - Discontinue
use ofunit i f
fuel tank shows signs o fdamage or
leaks.
• Debris Shield - Discontinue
use of
unit i fdebris shield i sdamaged.
CLEAN U NIT & LABELS
• Clean t he unit u sing a damp c loth
with amild detergent.
• Wipe o ff u nit w ith aclean d ry cloth.
CLEAN AIR FILTER
Adirty airfilter d ecreases
engine per-
formance
and increases
fuel consump-
tion and harmful emissions.
Always
clean a fter e very 5hours o foperation.
• Clean t he cover and the area around
ittokeep d irt f rom falling i nto the
carburetor
chamber when t he cover
isremoved.
• Remove parts a sillustrated.
NOTE: Do not c lean f ilter i ngasoline
orother flammable
solvent toavoid
creating afire hazard orproducing
harmful evaporative
emissions.
• Wash t he filter i nsoap and water.
• Allow filter t odry.
• Add afew drops o foil t othe filter;
squeeze the filter t odistribute
oil.
• Replace parts.

REPLACE
SPARK PLUG
Replace the spark p lug each y ear to
ensure theengine starts easier and
runs b etter. Set s park p lug gap at
.025 in.Ignition timing i sfixed and
nonadjustable.
• Twist, then pull offspark p lug boot.
• Remove spark p lug f rom cylinder
and discard.
• Replace with Champion
CJ-8Y s park
plug a nd tighten with a3/4 in. s ocket
wrench (10-12 ft.-Ibs).
• Reinstall
the spark p lug boot.
REPLACING
THE LINE
IN THE
FIXED-LINE
CUTTING
HEAD
• Always
use Craftsman
replacement
line.
Choose the line size best suited for the
job at hand.
Green-colored
line is de-
signed for cutting grass, red-colored
line for grass and small weeds.
The
black-colored
line is designed
for cut-
ting larger weeds and light brush.
• Before inserting the line into the holes
in the cutting head, identify the proper
holes. When using green or red, insert
line into the holes marked small on the
cutting head.
Black line should be in-
serted in the holes marked
large.
• Insert both ends of your line through
the proper holes in the side of the cut-
ting head.
