Hewlett-Packard, in cooperation with Oracle Corporation, has successfully completed the Oracle Storage
Compatibility Program testing for the HP NAS 8000 and Oracle 8i on UNIX Servers. The Storage
Compatibility Program is designed to verify a NAS device's ability to safely store the data files for an active
Oracle database. Completing the OSCP program indicates that the NAS 8000 will maintain data integrity
in the unlikely event of a variety of system and network failures.
The explosive growth in the amount of data being created, collected and analyzed has created an
unprecedented need for storage that can be quickly integrated into existing environments, is highly reliable,
is easy to manage and maintain, and is easily scalable. Contributing to the rapid growth of storage needs
are high-powered database engines, such as Oracle, that can make collecting and analyzing of data a
more efficient task. In the not too distant past, the use of Network Attached Storage (NAS or non-local
storage) to store a database's critical data files, was considered risky and unreliable. However, advances
in networking and storage technologies have changed this perception. It is now common for large, medium
and small businesses to use a network to store, access and share critical data. The HP NAS 8000
configurations listed in the product information section below have successfully completed, or are in the
process of completing, the OSCP program. This document describes how to implement an Oracle
database utilizing the NAS 8000 as the storage receptacle for one or more Oracle databases.
This document is targeted at the Oracle database administrator and/or the IT administrator responsible for
the HP NAS 8000. Within this document the term 'server' shall refer to the Oracle server and NAS 8000
storage subsystem is synonymous with VA 7xxx array. It should be understood that although the Oracle
executable files may physically be located on the NAS 8000, the NAS 8000 does not execute any Oracle
code.
