    About Your Printer Your printer is the latest in EPSON’s advanced line of network laser printers. It emulates the Hewlett-Packard (LJ4) printer, allowing you to print using the wide variety of software programs that support HP LaserJet printers.     Do not touch the areas specified on the caution labels inside cover A. If the printer has been in use, these areas can be very hot. CAUTION Hot Surface Avoid Contact Do not touch the components inside the printer unless instructed to do so in this guide.
  • Page 22 Protect the light-sensitive drum from exposure to light. Avoid exposing the imaging cartridge to room light any longer than necessary. Do not open the drum’s protective cover. Overexposing the drum may cause abnormally dark or light areas to appear on the printed page and reduce the service life of the drum.

    Do not use this printer near water. Do not place the printer on an unstable cart, stand, or table. Slots and openings in the cabinet and the back or bottom are provided for ventilation.     Note: Since the quality of any particular brand or type of paper may be changed by the manufacturer at any time, EPSON cannot guarantee the quality of any type of paper. Always test samples of paper stock before purchasing large quantities or printing large jobs.

    Envelopes Printing quality on envelopes may be irregular because different parts of an envelope have different thicknesses. If the printing is too light, adjust the print density in the printer driver or the printer’s control panel. Note: Because thickness and surface characteristics are especially important for envelopes, test a sample for print quality and proper feeding before you buy a large number of envelopes.

    Selecting the paper size By default, the printer driver is set for A4 size paper to be loaded. If you load paper of a different size, change the paper size setting using one of the following methods. Using the printer driver Choose the paper size on the Basic Settings menu.

    The display and indicator lights tell you the current status of the printer, and you can use the printer buttons to select settings and functions. However, software settings usually override these settings.

    OneTouch mode 1 On when the printer is on line, indicating the printer can receive and print data. When the printer is off line, this light is off. The light flashes as the system switches between on-line and off-line status.

    After installing the options, read the usage instructions below. Make sure you select the option or options that you have installed in the printer driver’s Option menu. Large Capacity Paper Unit Be sure to select the paper source in your application program when printing to the Large Capacity Paper Unit.

    The Duplex Unit enables you to print on both sides of plain paper and supports the following paper sizes. A3, A4, Ledger, Letter, HLT, Legal, GLG, Executive. To use the Duplex Unit, select the duplex function in your printer driver or in SelecType. Caution: You cannot print on labels, envelopes, or transparencies with the Duplex Unit.

    Note: Check for jams at all paper sources or paths indicated on the control panel. The printer cannot resume printing if the jams are not cleared. The control panel shows up to four paper sources or paths at the same time. Other areas where jams may be occurring will be shown on the control panel after you have checked all indicated jams.

  • Page 160 Do not store your paper in a humid or damp environment. You may not be using the correct type of paper for your printer. If the surface of your paper is too rough, printed characters appear distorted or broken.

    Even with additional memory installed, complex pages don’t print and the Mem Overflow message still appears. The Page Protect setting in the printer driver or SelecType may need to be changed. You may not have enough memory installed. If you are printing at 600 dpi, printing at 300 dpi may solve the problem.

    Fonts that reside on your computer’s hard disk can be downloaded, or transferred, to the printer so they can be printed. Downloaded fonts, also called soft fonts, remain in printer memory until you turn off the printer or otherwise reinitialize it.     (characters per inch) A measure of the size of fixed-width text characters. default A value or setting that takes effect when the printer is turned on, reset, or initialized. dots per inch (dpi) The number of dots per inch is a measure of printer resolution. The higher the number of dots, the higher the resolution.
