Hard Disks
This field records the specifications for all non-SCSI hard disk drives
installed in the system. (Specifications for SCSI hard disks are not
entered here because they operate using device drivers and are not
supported by the BIOS.)
For IDE hard disk drive setup, you can:
Use the Auto setting for detection during bootup.
Use IDE HDD Auto Detection in the main menu to automatically
enter the drive specifications.
Enter the specifications yourself manually by using the "User"
option.
The entries for specifying the hard disk type include number of cylinders
(CYLS), number of read/write heads (HEAD), write precompensation
(PRECOMP), landing zone (LANDZ), number of sectors (SECTOR), and
MODE. The SIZE field automatically adjusts according to the configura-
tion you specify.
The MODE entry is for IDE hard disks only; it can be ignored for MFM and ESDI
drives. This entry provides four options:
Normal — use this setting for 528 MB or smaller IDE drives
LBA — use this setting for 528 MB or larger IDE drives that support
logical block addressing
Large — use this setting for 528-MB or larger IDE drives that do not
support logical block addressing.
Auto — see the discussion on the next page.
The Large drive type can be used only with MS-DOS and is very uncom-
mon. Most IDE drives over 528MB support the LBA mode.
