Overview of Windows installations

The JRun SDK includes merge modules that correspond to functional components in
JRun. You can easily customize these modules, and add or remove them from installers
on the Windows platform.
When creating custom installers for the Windows platform, you have two choices:
Windows Installer environment
Non-Windows Installer environment
This section explains the differences between the two environments. Subsequent sections
describe how to create custom JRun installers for each of these types of environments.
If you do not use the merge modules in a Windows Installer environment or the included
Windows Installer wrapper, you can create your own custom installer using the raw
filesets in the sdk_root/filesets directory.

Windows Installer environments

The Microsoft Windows Installer technology uses setup rules to manage the installation
and removal of applications. The JRun SDK provides merge modules for building
custom JRun installers with the Windows Installer tool.
You can use the Windows Installer tool in the following GUI environments:
InstallShield Developer 7
Wise Solution Wise for Windows Installer 4
Microsoft Visual Studio Installer
You can also execute an installation with the Windows Installer tool from the command
line, as described in the section
24.
For more information on creating custom JRun installers using the Windows Installer
tool, see
For information on using InstallShield 7 to build a JRun installer, see
InstallShield Developer 7" on page

Non-Windows Installer environments

Some installer developers use non-Windows Installer environments. JRun provides a
wrapper for working with Windows Installer merge modules in a non-Windows Installer
environment on a Windows platform.
The following installer development environments do not conform to the Windows
Installer standard:
InstallShield Developer version 6.x and earlier
Wise Solution Wise for Windows Installer version 3.x and earlier
InstallAnywhere (all versions)
