    Selecting the Cables You Will Need The cables you will need for connecting components to your HDTV are not supplied with the HDTV, but they are readily available from your local electronics store. The following is a list of cables you may need. The specific cables you will need depend upon the components you would like to connect.

    Connecting Antennas This section shows how to connect cable TV with and without a cable box, and how to con- nect an indoor/outdoor antenna. If you have cable TV with a cable box, and also plan on con- necting a VCR, please see the section on how to connect a VCR with a cable box (page 7). Cable TV without a Cable Box If you have cable TV and do not use a cable box, plug and screw the cable into the rear cable antenna input as shown in the following illustration.

    Connecting Video Equipment This section shows how to connect the following video equipment to your HDTV: a VCR without a cable box, a VCR with a cable box, a VCR using Monitor Out, a Digital Satellite System (DSS), a Digital Video Disc (DVD) player with standard or advanced video outputs, a laser disc player and a camcorder.

    VCR with Monitor Out Outputs If you connect a VCR with the MONITOR OUT outputs on the rear panel of the HDTV, the VCR will record exactly what you are viewing on the HDTV. For example, if you want to record from your camcorder, connect the camcorder to the HDTV front panel inputs (VIDEO 3) and the VCR to the HDTV rear panel MONITOR OUT outputs.

    Understanding the On-screen Menu System The menu system presents information on three different levels. The icons on the left side of the screen are the first level menu. The options are Picture, Sound, Time, Setup, Guide and Help. When you use the remote control to select an icon at the first level, the HDTV displays a second level menu.

    Using the On-screen Help To turn the on-screen help on: Point the remote control at the HDTV and press the MENU button. The first level menu and the yellow on-screen pointer appear on the screen. Press the I-Point control up, down, left or right to move the pointer across the screen until the Help/Off icon changes from blue to red.

    HDTV HDTV etting There are a few things to do before you can fully enjoy all of the features of your HDTV. These include: selecting the menu language (if you prefer to read the menus in French or Spanish, rather than English), memorizing channels, adding and deleting channels, setting the time and date, setting up favorite channels, fine tuning analog channels, checking digital channel signal strength and adjusting the convergence.

    If you connected both a cable and an indoor/outdoor antenna: Repeat steps 2-4 on page 18, but select the other antenna in step 4. For exam- ple, if the HDTV has already memorized the cable TV channels, select indoor/outdoor antenna in step 4. You can now press ANTENNA on the remote control to switch back and forth between cable TV and indoor/outdoor antenna channels.

    HDTV iewing the uides and isplays Your HDTV includes special features to help you navigate through your viewing options. The Program Guide, Channel Guide and Minor Channel Display provide information and navigation tools for “major” and “minor” channels. A“major“ channel is a group of channels belonging to a broadcast corporation. For example, the XYZ Broadcasting Corporation may broadcast three different channels: XYZ-1, XYZ-2 and XYZ-3.

    Viewing the Channel Guide The Channel Guide displays information about an individual channel, both about the program currently being broadcast and upcoming programs on that same channel. The Channel Guide supplies a higher level of detail about individual programs; it provides a program synopsis and lists all of the minor channels available.

The channels and programs are locked out by way of a secret code, which you select. The first time you lock channels or lock programs by ratings, the HDTV will ask you to enter a secret code.

    Locking Programs by Ratings This feature allows you to lock out programs using the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) ratings and the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) TV Parental Guidelines. The MPAA rating system, used for defining motion picture content, now interacts with V-chip technology, allowing you to lock out motion pictures with specific ratings.
