Relieve pressure before perform-

POSSIBLE CAUSE
The fitting of the inlet is not tight.
Over-pressurization
The connection is not tight.

Not connected to a nozzle.

dry, clean and free from oil and grease.
CORRECTION
Use thread seal tape on inlet.
Check that the pressure washer's PSI
doesn't exceed the manufacturer's
specifications.
Tighten the lance segment.
Reverse flush the unit with water.
Connect an appropriate nozzle.
