• Switch the ignition on.
• Step on the brake pedal and simultaneous ly
ho ld down the release button.
Automatic selector lever lock
The selector lever is locked in the P and N po-
sitions when the ignition is on. To move the
lever from these positions the driver must de-
press the brake pedal. As a reminder to the
driver, the fo llowing warning appears in the
instrument cluster d isplay when the selector
is in P and N:
To start engine or select gear apply foot
brake when stationary
The selector lever lock is effective only when
the vehicle is stationary and at speeds below
S km/h . At higher speeds, the lock in the N
position is automatically switched off .
The selector lever is not locked when rapid
shifts are made through the N position (e.g .
from R to D). This allows you to "rock" the ve-
hicle if it becomes stuck. If the lever is in the
N position for more than 1 second with the
brake pedal not depressed, the se lector lock
engages automatically .
Release button
The release button in the se lector lever han-
d le prevents accidental shifts into certa in se-
lector lever posit ions . When you press the re-
lease button, the selector lever lock is cancel-
led . In the illustration, the pos itions in which
the release button has to be pressed are high-
lighted in color ¢ fig. 80.
Ignition key removal lock
The ignition key can only be removed after the
ignit ion is switched off if the selector lever is
in P. As long as the ignit ion key is removed,
the selector lever is locked in P.

Tips
If the selector lever does not engage,
there is a malfunction . The eng ine is disa-
bled to p revent the veh icle from driving off
unintent iona lly. To allow the selecto r lever
to engage again, proceed as follows: Press
and release the brake peda l.
Driving Notes
Applies to vehicles: with S tronic
The forward gears ore shifted up or down au-
tomatically.

Starting the engine
• The se lector lever must be in the P or t he N
posi t ion. At low temperatures
(below -10
°C), the eng ine can only be started when the
selector lever is in t he P position.
Sta rting from stop
• Step on and hold the brake pedal.
• Hold the release button (button in selector
lever) down, move the selecto r lever to the
des ired position, for example D ¢ page 78,
and release the button .
• Release the brake peda l and accelerate

Stopping t emporarily
• Bring the veh icle to a full st op wit h the
brake, e.g . at traffic signals .
• Do not accelerate .
Parking
• Step on and hold the brake pedal ~

• App ly the parking brake firm ly.
• Hold t he release button down, move t hese-
lector lever to P and release the button .
