Explanation
A battery for the purposes of this document consists of at least one battery cabi-
net with one battery management system and a number of battery modules. De-
pending on the system configuration, up to four battery cabinets can be wired to
form a battery.
Central processing unit of the battery cabinet (Accelerated Processing Unit,
APU).
The Dynamic Battery Optimizer (DPO) assembly is part of the battery manage-
ment system. The DPO assembly controls and monitors the charging and dis-
charging of the battery cells.
The state of charge (SoC) indicates the amount of energy available in a battery,
expressed as a percentage. A state of charge of 100% is equivalent to a fully
charged battery. The battery management system is able to determine the state
of charge of a cell or battery module based on parameters, and to terminate
charging if required. This prevents overcharging of the battery. To prevent unnec-
essary stress on the cells, the software has the same function for discharging. The
manufacturer defines battery limit conditions, at which the system terminates
charging and discharging.
The state of health (SoH) indicates the condition of a battery. By closely monitor-
ing the state of health, the battery management system is able to identify dispari-
ties in power at cell level and in this way detect damaged or defective cells. De-
pending on the severity of the fault, the battery inverter may become discon-
nected from the battery management system or the battery may be shut down.
Balancing is a battery management system function. It ensures that the charge is
split evenly between all battery cells within a battery module, all battery modules
within a battery cabinet, and all battery cabinets within a battery.
