• Do not touch the thermal grease while handling the heat-sink-and-fan assembly.
4. To install the new heat-sink-and-fan assembly, do the following:
a. Apply appropriate amount of thermal grease to the new heat-sink-and-fan assembly.
b. Position the heat-sink-and-fan assembly on the system board. Ensure that the four screws are
aligned with the holes in the system board.
Note: Ensure that the heat-sink-and-fan assembly cable is toward the microprocessor fan connector
on the system board.
c. Follow the following sequence to tighten the four screws to secure the new heat-sink-and-fan
assembly. Do not over-tighten the screws.
• Partially tighten screw
• Partially tighten screw
d. Connect the heat-sink-and-fan assembly cable to the microprocessor fan connector on the system
board. See "Parts on the system board" on page 37.

Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any repair before reading and understanding the Chapter
1 "Read this first: Important safety information" on page 1.
CAUTION:
The heat-sink-and-fan assembly and microprocessor might be very hot. Before you open the
computer cover, turn off the computer and wait several minutes until the computer is cool.
To remove or install the microprocessor, do the following:
1. Prepare your computer. See "Preparing your computer" on page 92.
2. Locate the microprocessor. See "Parts on the system board" on page 37.
3. Remove the heat sink and fan assembly. See "Heat-sink-and-fan assembly" on page 148.
Note: Place the heat-sink-and-fan assembly on its side so that the thermal grease on the bottom does
not contact with anything.
