10. Release the blade control bar; refer to position B
in Figure 17. You should hear a "bang." The blade
should stop in 3 seconds.
11. Immediately push the lawn mower over the
newspaper ball.
12. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to
stop.
13. Walk around the lawn mower to check for the
newspaper ball. If the ball did not go under the
deck, repeat steps 6 through 12.
14. Pull the lawn mower away from the newspaper.
If the newspaper ball unravels or is shredded, the
blade has not properly stopped, resulting in an
unsafe operating condition. Contact an Authorized
Service Dealer.
To check for a problem with the blade brake clutch
system before it affects its normal operation, you can
perform the Special Test that follows.
Special Test
1. Follow steps 1 through 7 from the Normal Test.
2. Move the blade control bar down to its lowest
position (Position B in Figure 17).
3. Bring the blade control bar up into the middle
position about 5 inches (12.7 cm) below the handle
cross bar (Position C in Figure 18).
Note: This intermediate position (C) is not the
normal operating position of the blade control bar.
However, it helps to detect a sticking blade brake
clutch system early enough to prevent an unsafe
condition later.
