Glossary

To help you understand the main technical terms
and abbreviations used in this booklet and take
full advantage of the features of your mobile
phone, here are a few definitions.
3G (3rd Generation)
The collective name used to describe mobile
systems able to support a wide range of Mobile
Internet services, operating with greater
bandwidth.
Bearer
Various mechanisms the network uses to
transmit voice and data.
Call Barring
Ability to restrict outgoing and incoming calls.
Call Diverting
Ability to reroute calls to another number.

Call Holding
Ability to put one call on standby while answering
or making another call; you can then switch
between the two calls, as required.
Call Waiting
Ability to inform users that they have an
incoming call when engaged on another call.
Circuit-switched
A type of network in which a physical path is
obtained for and dedicated to a single connection
between two end-points in the network for the
duration of the connection. The telephone
networks are examples of circuit-switched
networks. Ordinary voice phone service is circuit-
switched. The telephone company reserves a
specific physical path to the number you are
calling for the duration of your call. During that
time, no one else can use the physical lines
involved.
