How to Make Coffee

Before first use:
Wash all removable parts in hot, soapy water. Rinse and dry. Brew one cycle with water and discard water.

If filter basket overflow occurs, unplug coffee maker and allow coffee in filter basket to cool before removing filter basket. To avoid hot coffee overflowing from the filter basket:

  • When using decaffeinated coffee, do not exceed the coffee manufacturer's recommended serving amount.
  • The carafe must be replaced within 20 seconds of being removed to prevent overflow.

Do not immerse cord, plug, or coffee maker in any liquid.

  1. Lift Lid. Move Swivel Showerhead over Water Reservoir and remove Filter Basket.
  2. Place a cupcake-style paper filter in Filter Basket. A Permanent Filter may also be used.
  3. For each cup of coffee being made, place one level tablespoon (15 ml) of coffee into filter.
  4. Fill Carafe with desired amount of water. Add water to Water Reservoir.
  5. Add Filter Basket and lower Lid. The Swivel Showerhead will go back into place when you lower Lid.
  6. Place Carafe, with carafe lid attached, on Keep-Warm Plate.
  7. Plug into outlet.
  8. Press BREW OPTIONS button until desired option is selected: Regular, Bold, or 1–4 Cups, if brewing a smaller amount of coffee.
  9. Press (ON/OFF) button to start.
  10. PAUSE AND SERVE: To serve coffee during the brewing cycle, remove Carafe and pour a cup. Do not pause longer than 20 seconds. By removing Carafe, the flow of coffee from bottom of Filter Basket will stop.
  11. Press (ON/OFF) button when finished. Unplug.
NOTE: If the Coffee Maker has a glass Carafe and is not turned off manually, it will automatically shut off in 2 hours.

For Thermal Carafe Models:

  • Rinse Carafe with hot water before making coffee to keep coffee hot longer.
  • Coffee Maker will automatically shut off once brewing is finished.

How to Program

  1. Press H (hour) and then M (minute) to set clock.
  2. While holding PROG (program) button, press H and M until the desired brewing start time is reached.
  3. Press and release PROG button for less than 1 second to set Coffee Maker to come on automatically at the desired time. Press PROG again to cancel automatic brew.

Best-Tasting Coffee Tips

  • All coffees are made from either arabica beans or robusta beans, or some combination of both. Arabica beans are slightly more expensive, but tend to produce better-tasting coffee.
  • Ground coffee will become stale much faster than whole beans. If buying preground coffee, choose a package with the latest expiration date or a smaller quantity.
  • If grinding whole beans, set your coffee grinder on a fine/medium grind. This will yield the best-tasting grounds. Try to use freshly ground coffee within about a week of grinding.
  • Using a water filter, filtered water, or bottled water will yield better-tasting coffee than tap water.
  • Use approximately 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of grounds for each cup of coffee being made. To avoid overflow, use slightly less grounds (3/4 tablespoon [11 ml]) when brewing decaf or flavored coffees.
Also, be aware that using coffee that is ground too finely may also cause the filter basket to overflow.
  • Make sure your coffee maker is clean.
    See "Care and Cleaning" section.

Care and Cleaning

Do not immerse cord, plug, or coffee maker in any liquid.

To remove mineral deposits and buildup:
All coffee makers should be cleaned at least once a month (once a week for areas with hard water).

  1. Remove Optional Water Filter.
  2. Pour 1 pint (2 cups [473 ml]) white vinegar into water reservoir.
  3. Press (ON/OFF) button to begin brew cycle. Press again after 30 seconds and wait 30 minutes. Press button again, then press once more when finished.
  4. Run 2–3 more brew cycles with clean water only. Allow to cool between cycles.
  5. Carafe and Removable Filter Basket are top-rack dishwasher-safe. Unplug and wipe outside of Coffee Maker with a damp cloth and dry.
  6. DO NOT use "SANI" setting on dishwasher. "SANI" cycle temperatures could damage your product.

How to Replace the Water Filter (optional)

NOTE: For better-tasting coffee, use a water filter.

  1. Soak filter pod for 15 minutes in water.
  2. Add pod to bottom of Water Filter and snap on filter handle.
  3. Place Water Filter into well of Water Reservoir.

Troubleshooting

Filter Basket overflows or coffee brews slowly

  • Bold setting allows for slower brewing to optimize a bold coffee flavor.
  • Excessive amounts of ground coffee.
  • Decaffeinated and/or coffee ground too finely can cause overflow. Use slightly less grounds when brewing decaffeinated, flavored, or finely ground coffee. Or, use medium ground coffee.
  • Coffee Maker needs cleaning.
  • If using a paper filter:
  • Coffee grounds between paper filter and filter basket.
  • Paper filter not open and in proper position.
  • Rinse filter basket before inserting paper filter so edges will remain pressed against sides of basket.
  • Poor quality paper filter.

Coffee tastes bad

  • Coffee Maker needs cleaning.
  • Coffee ground too coarsely or too finely. Use medium ground coffee.
  • Coffee-to-water ratio unbalanced. Adjust for personal preference.
  • Poor coffee quality and freshness.
  • Poor water quality. Use filtered or bottled water.

Coffee not brewing/unit will not turn on

  • Water Reservoir is empty.
  • Unit is unplugged.
  • Power outage.
  • Power surge. Unplug; then plug back in.
  • Clock requires reset after power outage.
