316 Wheels and tyres
Only these tyres will allow driving safety systems
®
such as ABS and ESP
in winter. These tyres have been developed spe‐
cifically for driving in snow.
Use M+S tyres of the same make and tread on all
wheels to maintain safe handling characteristics.
Always observe the maximum permissible speed
specified for the M+S tyres you have fitted.
If you fit M+S tyres that have a lower maximum
permissible speed than the maximum design
speed of the vehicle, affix an appropriate warning
sign in the driver's field of vision. You can obtain
this at a qualified specialist workshop.
Once you have fitted the winter tyres, take the
following measures:
check the tyre pressure (
R
restart the tyre pressure monitor

Notes on snow chains

For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recommends
that you only use snow chains that have been
checked and approved. You can find further infor‐
mation on snow chains recommended for
Mercedes-Benz in the wheel and tyre overview at
https://www.mercedes-benz.de.
& WARNING Risk of accident due to snow
chains breaking
If you drive too fast with snow chains, they
can break, injure other persons, and damage
the vehicle.
Observe the maximum permissible
#
speed for operation with snow chains.
* NOTE Damage to the wheel trim from fit‐
ted snow chains
If snow chains are fitted to steel wheels, the
wheel trims can be damaged.
Remove the wheel trims of steel wheels
#
before fitting snow chains.
Observe the following notes when using snow
chains:
Snow chains are only permissible for certain
R
wheel/tyre combinations. You can obtain
to also function optimally

/
information on them at a qualified specialist
workshop.
For safety reasons, only use snow chains that
R
have been specifically approved for your vehi‐
cle by Mercedes-Benz, or snow chains with
the same quality standard.
The snow chains must be retightened after
R
driving approximately 1 km. This is the only
way to ensure the snow chains are optimally
seated with clearance to adjacent compo‐
nents.
Use snow chains only when the road surface
R
is completely snow-covered. Remove the
snow chains as soon as possible when you
come to a road that is not snow-covered.
Local regulations may restrict the use of
R
snow chains. Observe the applicable regula‐
tions before fitting snow chains.
If snow chains are fitted, the maximum per‐
R
missible speed is 50 km/h.
%
You can deactivate ESP
(
page 162, 161). This allows the wheels to
/
spin, achieving an increased driving force.

Tyre pressure

Notes on tyre pressure
Driving with tyre pressure that is too high or too
low can:
Shorten the service life of the tyres
R
Cause increased tyre damage
R
Adversely affect handling characteristics and
R
thus driving safety, e.g. due to aquaplaning
& WARNING Risk of accident due to repea‐
ted pressure drop in the tyres
The wheels, valves or tyres could be dam‐
aged.
Too low a tyre pressure can lead to the tyres
bursting.
Examine the tyres for foreign objects.
#
Check whether the tyre has a puncture
#
or the valve has a leak.
If you are unable to rectify the damage,
#
contact a qualified specialist workshop.
Information on the recommended tyre pressure
for the vehicle's factory-fitted tyres can be found
