    Gross Vehicle Weight information for your vehicle is on the Passenger/Tire Pressure Warning Label in the rear cargo box. To order an extra or replacement key for your vehicle, please contact GEM customer service. Be prepared to provide your key number and VIN.

Special precautions must be followed when owning and operating a battery- powered vehicle. This vehicle is not a toy and can be hazardous to operate.     Do not install any non-GEM-approved accessory or modify the vehicle including for the purpose of increasing speed or power. The warranty on your GEM vehicle may be voided if any non-GEM-approved equipment and/or modifications have been added to the vehicle.
  • Page 20 SAFETY OPERATING WITHOUT INSTRUCTION Operating this vehicle without proper instruction increases the risk of an accident. The operator must understand how to operate the vehicle properly in different situations and on different types of terrain. All operators must read and understand the Owner's Manual and all warning and instruction labels before operating the vehicle.

    SAFETY VENTILATION WHEN CHARGING BATTERIES WARNING Maintenance and storage areas for this vehicle should be properly ventilated to avoid fire hazards in accordance with applicable fire codes and ordinances. Ventilation for this vehicle should be provided to remove the accumulation of flammable hydrogen gas emitted during the charging process.

    SAFETY VEHICLE ROLLOVER WARNING Vehicle rollover could cause serious injury or death. The cab frame is not designed or intended to provide rollover protection. Always make sure the seat belts are secured for operator and all passengers before operating. Avoid situations that could result in a rollover.
  • Page 24 SAFETY STALLING WHILE CLIMBING A HILL Stalling or rolling backwards while climbing a hill could cause a rollover. Always maintain a steady speed when climbing a hill. IF ALL FORWARD SPEED IS LOST: • Apply the brakes. • Switch to reverse and slowly allow the vehicle to roll straight downhill while applying light brake pressure to control speed.

    SAFETY OPERATING ON FROZEN BODIES OF WATER Severe injury or death can result if the vehicle and/or the operator fall through the ice. Never operate the vehicle on a frozen body of water. HOT DRIVE SYSTEMS The motor and controller are very hot during and after use of the vehicle. Hot components can cause burns and fire.

    FEATURES AND CONTROLS SPEEDOMETER The speedometer displays vehicle speed in miles per hour (MPH). ODOMETER The odometer records and displays the total distance traveled by the vehicle. The odometer will display in miles for the first five (5) seconds after the key is turned to the ON position, then the speed will display.
  • Page 30 FEATURES AND CONTROLS TURN SIGNAL The turn signal lever contains the controls for the turn signals, hazard signals and horn. Check turn signal lamps before each ride. When driving, activate a turn signal before turning to alert others of your intentions. The key must be in the ON position to activate the turn signals.

    FEATURES AND CONTROLS HEADLIGHT SWITCH The ignition switch key must be in the ON/RUN position to operate the headlights. Press the top of the rocker switch toward the dash to place the headlights on high beam. Move the rocker switch to the center position to place the headlights on low beam.

    FEATURES AND CONTROLS WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH CAUTION A worn or damaged wiper blade could impair operator vision and result in an accident. A worn wiper blade could also damage windshield glass. Always replace worn or damaged wiper blades promptly. The windshield wiper switch is located on the dash. Press the top of the switch to turn the wiper on.
  • Page 33 FEATURES AND CONTROLS PARK BRAKE LEVER To help prevent the vehicle from rolling, set the park brake when parking the vehicle. When the park brake is set and the park brake indicator is illuminated, motor speed is limited. If the accelerator is applied, this limiting feature prevents operation, which protects the park brake pads from excessive wear.

    FEATURES AND CONTROLS BATTERY HANDLING PRECAUTIONS • Always make sure that all electrical accessories are grounded directly to the negative (-) post on the terminal board. Never use the chassis or body as a ground connection. • Always keep battery terminals and connections clean and free of corrosion at all times.

    FEATURES AND CONTROLS AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IMPLICATIONS ON BATTERIES 1. Battery range decreases as ambient temperature decreases. Extreme cold can have a significant impact to range. Use of a heater accessory will further reduce range. 2. Batteries discharge when left uncharged. They can discharge up to 13% per month (higher rates in warmer climates) with the key off and much faster if the key is left on.
  • Page 39 FEATURES AND CONTROLS MAIN POWER CONNECTOR NOTICE Damage to electrical connections and components will occur if they are unplugged before the main power connector is disconnected. Always disconnect the main power connector before servicing or unplugging any electrical components. WARNING Insulate any tools used within the battery area to prevent sparks or battery explosion caused by shorting the battery terminals or wiring.

    FEATURES AND CONTROLS BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS BRAKE PEDAL The brake pedal is located on the floor to the left of the accelerator pedal. Push the brake pedal toward the floor to slow or stop the vehicle. Apply the brakes before turning the key on. WARNING Constant brake use (riding the brakes) can cause brakes to overheat and fail, which could lead to an accident resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Page 41 FEATURES AND CONTROLS SEAT ADJUSTMENT Seats can be adjusted forward or rearward. The seat adjustment lever is directly under the front of the seat. 1. Move the adjustment lever to the left and slide the seat to the desired position. 2.
  • Page 42 FEATURES AND CONTROLS PROPER SEAT BELT USE This vehicle is equipped with three- point lap and diagonal seat belts for all occupants. Always make sure the seat belts are secured for operator and all passengers before operating. When the key is turned on, the seat belt indicator lamp will illuminate if the driver’s seat belt is not fastened.
  • Page 43 (OPS) on this vehicle meets OSHA 1928.53 rollover performance requirements. Always have your authorized GEM dealer thoroughly inspect the OPS if it ever becomes damaged in any way. No device can assure occupant protection in the event of a rollover.

    OPERATION DRIVING THROUGH WATER Your GEM vehicle can operate through water up to a maximum recommended depth equal to the floorboards. NOTICE Serious damage can occur to the electrical system and batteries if the vehicle is operated in water deeper than the floorboards.

    OPERATION HAULING CARGO WARNING Hauling cargo improperly can alter vehicle handling and may cause loss of control or brake instability, which can result in serious injury or death. Always follow these precautions when hauling cargo: • Never exceed the maximum weight capacity of the vehicle. When determining the weight you are adding to the vehicle, include the weight of the operator, passenger, accessories, loads in the rack or box and the load on the trailer tongue.

Always be sure that at least five (5) full turns of winch cable are wrapped around the winch drum at all times.   • Page 69 WINCH GUIDE SHOCK LOADING WARNING Your winch cable is very strong but it is NOT designed for dynamic, or “shock” loading. Shock loading may tension a winch cable beyond its strength and cause the cable to break. The end of a broken winch cable under such high loading can cause SEVERE INJURY or DEATH to you and other bystanders.

    Inspect, clean, lubricate, adjust and replace parts as necessary. When inspection reveals the need for replacement parts, use genuine GEM parts available from your GEM dealer. Record maintenance and service in the Maintenance Log beginning on page 101.

Check and lubricate all components at the intervals outlined in the Periodic Maintenance Chart, or more often under severe use, such as wet or dusty conditions. Items not listed in the chart should be lubricated at the general lubrication interval.

  • Page 74 TRANSAXLE This gearbox uses a lifetime fluid. Checking the fluid level and changing the fluid is not required. Please see your authorized GEM dealer for any transaxle- related concerns. Do NOT add fluid to the transaxle unless changing the fluid. If changing the fluid, add only the recommended fluid capacity as stated in the specifications chart above.

    MAINTENANCE BRAKES The front and rear brakes are hydraulic disc type brakes. Press down on the brake pedal to engage the brakes. BRAKE FLUID Inspect the brake system routinely. Inspect the brake fluid level before each operation. If the level drops between fluid checks, add brake fluid as needed.

    MAINTENANCE BRAKE INSPECTION WARNING Do not apply WD-40 or any petroleum product to brake discs. These types of products are flammable and may also reduce the friction between the brake pad and caliper. 1. Check the brake system for fluid leaks.

    TIRE TREAD DEPTH Any accelerated wear of tires may be an indicator of improper alignment or poor driving habits. Your authorized GEM dealer can assist. Rotate wheels every 5,000 miles, or more frequently if needed.
  • Page 79 MAINTENANCE WHEEL INSTALLATION WARNING Improperly installed wheels can adversely affect tire wear and vehicle handling, which can result in serious injury or death. Always ensure that all nuts are torqued to specification. Do not service axle nuts that have a cotter pin installed.

    6. Reinstall the harness assembly into the headlight assembly FRONT AND REAR TURN SIGNAL LIGHT REPLACEMENT If a front or rear turn signal fails to work properly, the entire assembly must be replaced. See your authorized GEM dealer for this service.

  • Page 82 MAINTENANCE INDICATOR PANEL LAMP REPLACEMENT In the event that the indicator panel fails to illuminate, check to see if you have an expired lamp. To replace the indicator panel lamp, do the following: 1. Lift the hood. 2. Reach in behind the console panel and lift the release to unplug the light from the harness.

    MAINTENANCE BATTERY CHARGING When not in use, park the vehicle and connect the battery charger. The battery charge receptacle is located on the left side panel below the driver’s seat WARNING Failure to provide adequate ventilation while charging batteries can result in an explosion.

    MAINTENANCE 8. Make sure the charger uses a dedicated circuit to prevent overloading. If charging multiple vehicles, each vehicle should use a dedicated circuit. 9. When disconnecting the charger, always disconnect the extension cord from the wall receptacle first, then disconnect the cord from the vehicle’s charge receptacle.

    With proper care and maintenance, as outlined in this owner’s manual, battery life can be maximized, but the battery will eventually reach the end of its useful life. When battery replacement is necessary, your authorized GEM dealer can provide this service.
  • Page 87: Battery Fluid (Conventional Batteries)

    MAINTENANCE BATTERY FLUID (CONVENTIONAL BATTERIES) • A poorly maintained battery will deteriorate rapidly. Check the battery fluid level often. Add only distilled water. Tap water contains minerals that are harmful to a battery. • Unless the plates are exposed before charging, distilled water should be added to a battery after charging.
  • Page 88: Cleaning And Storage

    Certain products, including insect repellents and chemicals, will damage plastic surfaces. Do not allow these types of products to contact the vehicle. The best and safest way to clean your GEM vehicle is with a garden hose and a pail of mild soap and water.
  • Page 89 POLISHING THE VEHICLE GEM recommends the use of common household aerosol furniture polish for polishing the finish on your GEM vehicle. Follow the instructions on the container. POLISHING TIPS • Avoid the use of automotive products, some of which can scratch the finish of your vehicle.

    This warranty is transferable to another consumer during the warranty period through a GEM dealer, but any such transfer will not extend the original term of either warranty. The duration of this warranty and/or the battery warranty may vary by international region based upon local laws and regulations.

Upon receipt of this registration, GEM will record the registration for warranty.     WARRANTY IF YOU PURCHASE FROM A PRIVATE PARTY: If you purchase a GEM vehicle from a private party, to be kept and used outside of the country in which the product was originally purchased, all warranty coverage will be denied. You must nonetheless register your product under your name and address with a local GEM dealer in your country to ensure that you receive safety information and notices regarding your product.
