Chapter 4: Configure Idrac - Dell PowerProtect DM5500 Installation Manual

iDRAC configuration is not required but is strongly recommended, because iDRAC connections are helpful for Dell support
engineers to debug and troubleshoot issues. You can also use iDRAC to power the DM5500 on and off for required maintenance
activities. The iDRAC connections are typically on an external (public) network and can be part of the same external network
VLAN configuration or they can be separated into a different routed external network.
Prerequisites
The DM5500 must be racked.
The DM5500 must be physically cabled for iDRAC and LAN must be configured.
A USB to micro USB cable is required.
On your laptop/service computer, turn off any wireless networks and disconnect from any other hard wired network.
About this task
CAUTION: Do not use iDRAC to change the storage configuration, DM5500 settings, or BIOS settings, as making
changes to these will impact the DM5500 functionality. Contact Dell support if changes are required in any of
these areas.
The following procedure uses the iDRAC direct feature to configure iDRAC by directly connecting your laptop/service computer
to the micro USB port on the front of the DM5500.
Steps
1. Connect your laptop/service computer to the DM5500 using a USB to micro USB cable.
Plug the USB end of the cable into a USB port on your laptop/service computer, and plug the micro USB end of the cable
into the micro USB port on the right side of the front of the DM5500. For the location of the micro USB port, see
front view.
2. After you connect the USB the micro USB cable, the laptop will download the iDRAC Virtual NIC USB Device driver
automatically.
On your laptop/service computer, under Device Manager, Network adapters you will see Remote NDIS Compatible
Device #2.
3. Wait for the laptop to obtain the IP address 169.254.0.4. It is always the same IP address.
It may take several seconds for the IP addresses to be acquired. iDRAC acquires the IP address 169.254.0.3.
4. On your laptop/service computer, verify the new iDRAC IP address.
a. Open a browser, type the IP address 169.254.0.3, and press Enter.
The iDRAC login screen appears.
b. Log into iDRAC with the following credentials and change the root account password.
username: root
password: <appliance_serial_number>
The 14-character appliance serial number is located on the white label on the information tag.
The information tag is located at the back of the server, to the right of the power supply units. For the location of the
information tag, see DM5500 back panel
