DANGER: This ma chine was built to be op erated ac cording to the rules for safe op eration in this man -
ual. As with any type of power equip ment, care lessness or er ror on the part of the op erator can re sult
in serious in jury. This machine is ca pable of am putating hands and feet and throwing ob jects. Failure
to ob serve the fol lowing safety in structions could re sult in se rious in jury or death.
Gen eral Op er a tion
Read this op erator's man ual care fully in its en tirety be fore at-
tempting to as semble this ma chine. Read, un derstand, and
follow all in structions on the ma chine and in the man ual(s)
be fore op er a tion. Be com pletely fa mil iar with the con trols and
the proper use of this ma chine before op erating it. Keep this
manual in a safe place for fu ture and regular ref erence and for
or der ing re place ment parts.
This ma chine is a precision piece of power equipment, not a
plaything. There fore, ex ercise ex treme caution at all times.
Your unit has been designed to perform one job: to mow
grass. Do not use it for any other purpose.
Never al low children un der 14 years old to op erate this ma -
chine. Chil dren 14 years old and over should read and
understand the in structions in this man ual and should be
trained and su per vised by a par ent. Only re spon si ble in di vid u -
als who are fa miliar with these rules of safe op eration should
be allowed to use this machine.
Thoroughly in spect the area where the equip ment is to be
used. Re move all stones, sticks, wire, bones, toys and other
foreign ob jects which could be tripped over or picked up and
thrown by the blade. Thrown ob jects can cause serious per-
sonal in jury. Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of
material to ward roads, side walks, by standers and the like.
Also, avoid discharging ma terial against a wall or ob struction
which may cause discharged material to ric ochet back toward
the op er a tor.
To help avoid blade con tact or a thrown object in jury, stay in
the op erator zone be hind the han dles and keep chil dren, by -
standers, help ers and pets at least 75 feet from the mower
while it is in op eration. Stop machine if anyone en ters the
area.
Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles dur ing operation
and while per forming an ad justment or re pair to protect your
eyes. Thrown objects which ric ochet can cause se rious in jury
to the eyes.
Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-fitting slacks
and shirts. Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and
steel-toed shoes are rec ommended. Never op erate this ma-
chine in bare feet, sandals, slippery or light weight (e.g.
can vas) shoes.
Do not put hands or feet near ro tating parts or un der the cut-
ting deck. Con tact with the blade can am putate hands and
feet.
A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade con -
tact or thrown ob ject in juries.
Many in juries oc cur as a re sult of the mower be ing pulled
over the foot during a fall caused by slipping or tripping. Do
not hold on to the mower if you are falling; release the handle
im me di ately.

Never pull the mower back to ward you while you are walk ing.
If you must back the mower away from a wall or ob struction
first look down and behind to avoid tripping and then fol low
these steps:
a. Step back from the mower to fully extend your arms.
b. Be sure you are well bal anced with sure footing.
c. Pull the mower back slowly, no more than half way to -
ward you.
d. Repeat these steps as needed.
Do not operate the mower while un der the in fluence of alco-
hol or drugs.
Do not en gage the self-propelled mech anism on units so
equipped while starting en gine.
The blade control han dle is a safety de vice. Never at tempt to
bypass its op eration. Doing so makes the safety de vice in op-
erative and may result in per sonal in jury through contact with
the ro tating blade. The blade control han dle must op erate
easily in both di rections and automatically re turn to the disen-
gaged position when re leased.
Never op erate the mower in wet grass. Al ways be sure of your
footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal in jury. If
you feel you are losing your foot ing, re lease the blade con trol
handle im mediately and the blade will stop ro tating within
three sec onds.
Mow only in daylight or in good artificial light. Walk, never run.
Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives, walks or roads.
If the equipment should start to vi brate ab normally, stop the
engine and check immediately for the cause. Vi bration is gen -
erally a warn ing of trou ble.
Shut the en gine off and wait un til the blade co mes to a com -
plete stop be fore re moving the grass catcher or un clogging
the chute. The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few sec-
onds af ter the en gine is shut off. Never place any part of the
body in the blade area un til you are sure the blade has
stopped ro tat ing.
Never op erate mower with out proper trail shield, dis charge
cover, grass catcher, blade control han dle or other safety pro -
tective devices in place and working. Never operate mower
with damaged safety devices. Failure to do so, can re sult in
per sonal in jury.
Muffler and en gine be come hot and can cause a burn. Do not
touch.
Only use parts and ac cessories made for this machine by the
manufacturer. Failure to do so can re sult in per sonal injury.
If situations oc cur which are not cov ered in this man ual, use
care and good judg ment. Call cus tomer assistance for the
name of your nearest servicing dealer.
