    Information Labels: Make sure all informa- tion labels are undamaged and readable. Immediately replace damaged or missing information labels. New labels are available from your local authorized Shindaiwa dealer. This machine is designed for trimming hedges. Do not use this machine for other purposes.

    Fuel Tank Guard Throttle Trigger Powerhead Assembly Using the illustration as a guide, familiarize yourself with the Shindaiwa AH242 articu- lated hedge trimmer and its various components. Under- standing your machine helps ensure top performance, longer service life, and safer operation.

    Do not touch the cutter blades when the engine is running. The blades can oscillate even if the engine is idling. Position the hedge trimmer on a flat, level surface. With your right hand, grasp the outer tube near the handle. With your left hand, grip the adjustment lever on the cutter assembly.
  • Page 8 Assembly (continued) Cutter Assembly Positions The cutter assembly can be adjusted to eleven different positions rang- ing from 120° to 270° from the outer tube as shown. Always make sure the latch lock is securely locked after each adjustment. Adjusting for Storage or Transportation With the engine off, install the blade cover onto the blade.

    2 Stroke Mixture Oil - A 2-stroke engine oil meeting ISO-L-EGD (ISO/CD 13738) and J.A.S.O. M345/FD standards must be used. Shindaiwa One formulated for use in all Shindaiwa 2-stroke engines. Engine problems due to inadequate lubrication caused by fail- ure to use an ISO-L-EGD (ISO/CD 13738) and J.A.S.O. M345/FD certified oil will void the engine warranty.

    Mixing Instructions 1. Fill an approved fuel container with half of the required amount of gasoline. 2. Add the proper amount of engine oil to gasoline. 3. Close container and shake to mix oil with gaso- line. 4. Add remaining gasoline, close fuel container, and remix.
  • Page 11 Starting the Engine (continued) Slide the ignition switch to the “I” position. Press the primer bulb until fuel can be seen flowing in the transparent return tube. IMPORTANT! The primer system only pushes fuel through the carburetor. Repeatedly pressing the primer bulb will not flood the engine with fuel.

    Checking Unit Condition NEVER operate the unit with the pro- tective devices removed! Use only authorized Shindaiwa parts and accessories with your Shindaiwa hedge trimmer. Do not make modi- fications to this unit without written approval from Shindaiwa.

    Horizontal Cut: Hold the cutting blade at an angle of 0° to 10° as you swing the hedge trimmer horizontally. Swing the blade in an arc towards the outside of the hedge so that the cuttings are swept on to the ground.

    Maintenance (continued) Daily maintenance Prior to each work day, perform the following: ■ Remove all dirt and debris from the engine, check the cooling fins and air cleaner for clogging, and clean as necessary. ■ Carefully remove any accumulations of dirt or debris from the muffler and fuel tank.
  • Page 16 Use a hooked wire to extract the fuel filter from inside the fuel tank. Inspect the fuel filter element. If it shows signs of contamination, replace with a genuine Shindaiwa replacement fuel filter element. CAUTION! Make sure you do not pierce the fuel line with the end of the hooked wire.
  • Page 17 Maintenance (continued) CAUTION! Do not remove the D-shaped shim washer from the gearcase clamp! The shim washer prevents damage from overtightening the tube clamp bolt. Slide the gearcase out of the tube. Using a grease gun, pump lithium- base grease (about 10 grams) into the grease fitting (B) on the gearcase until you see old grease being purged from the gearcase.

    This engine has been factory adjusted to maintain satisfactory starting, emission, and durability performance up to 1,100 feet above sea level (ASL) (96.0 kPa).     The owner shall demonstrate reasonable care and use, and follow preventative maintenance, storage, fuel and oil usage as pre- scribed in the operator’s manual. Should a product diffi culty occur, you must, at your expense, deliver or ship your Shindaiwa unit to an authorized Shindaiwa servicing dealer for warranty repairs (within the applicable warranty period), and arrange for pick-up or return of your unit after the repairs have been made.
