    Getting started Parts checklist Your telephone contains the following items. Save your sales receipt and original packaging in the event warranty service is necessary.     Getting started Battery installation Install the battery as shown below. Plug the battery connector securely into the socket inside the handset battery compartment, matching the color-coded label. Place the battery with the label THIS SIDE UP facing up and the wires inside the battery compartment.

    Getting started Battery charging Once you have installed the battery, the screen indicates the battery status (see the table below). If necessary, place the handset in the telephone base or charger to charge the battery. For best performance, keep the handset in the telephone base or charger when not in use.

    Getting started Add and register a handset You can add new handsets (DS6401, purchased separately) to your telephone system, but each handset must be registered with the telephone base before use. When first purchased, each expansion handset shows Put handset on BASE to register after a battery is installed. You may need to charge the handset before registering it to the telephone base.

    Getting started Deregister handsets If you want to replace a handset or reassign the designated handset number of a registered handset, you must deregister all handsets. Then register each handset you wish to use individually. To make deregistration easier, read all of the instructions on this page before you begin.

    Getting started Handset layout CHARGE light On when the handset is charging in the telephone base or charger. Softkeys (2) Press to select a menu item displayed above the key. While in a menu, press to select an item, or save an entry or setting.

When the handset is not in use, press to enter the directory. When entering numbers and names in the directory, press to move the cursor to the left.

    Appendix Battery It takes up to 16 hours for the battery to be fully charged. When it is fully charged, you can expect the following performance: Operation Operating time While in handset use (talking*) Up to seven hours While in speakerphone mode (talking*) Up to five hours While not in use (standby**) Up to seven days *Operating times vary depending on your actual use and the age of the battery.

    When this mode is activated, all telephone functions, except handset battery charging, will be disabled. If you have registered the handset to the DS6421/DS6472 base, follow the instructions below to activate and deactivate the energy-saving charging mode. To activate the energy-saving charging mode: Unplug the telephone base power adapter from the power outlet.
