FRAM71B
16 Programming Cable for ACTEL FlashPro Programmer
FRAM71B can be firmware-upgraded through its JTAG interface using an ACTEL FlashPro4/5
programmer and a special programming cable. To prepare your FRAM71B for upgrade, use
the setup pictured below. To use the original FRAM71 programming cable, insert small con-
nector pin into socket of red cable as shown.
Picture 12: Programming Setup. Note red cable for 3.3V supply.
v During the entire upgrade process, FRAM71B requires power to be supplied from the
HP-71B. Make sure that your HP-71B has fresh batteries installed and is switched OFF.
Weak batteries will cause the upgrade process to fail and consequently lock up the
HP-71B. DO NOT USE an HP82066/HP82059 AC-adapter (or any other AC-adapter for
that matter)
v during the upgrade process, as leakage currents in those adapters may cause perma-
nent ESD damage to your FRAM71B and/or HP-71B. Always take proper ESD protection
measures before connecting the programmer to your FRAM71B.
FRAM71B doesn't supply VJTAG and VPUMP to the JTAG interface, therefore VJTAG must be
supplied separately during programming. This is achieved by tapping off FRAM71B's 3.3V
supply, which is available at CN3:1, and fed through the red cable to pins CN5:3 (VJTAG) and
CN5:5 (VPUMP). Although the FLashPro5 is able to supply VPUMP, it doesn't work on my
specimen; hence I opted to connect both VJTAG and VPUMP to CN3:1. You will see a VPUMP
warning message in the FlashPro software, which can safely be ignored.
