Softener Sanitation Procedure; Start-Up - Kinetico 2030s Installation Instructions

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
12. With the unit in service and under pressure, allow the brine drum to fill with water until the brine valve shuts off.
(The water level should be approximately one inch over the grid plate.)
13. After the unit is fully pressurized, open a faucet in the house to purge air from lines. Check all other house
faucets, and purge air by manually cycling unit from one tank to the other.
NOTE: When installation is complete, chlorinate plumbing lines for sanitation. You may use common
household bleach. The amount of bleach will vary depending on plumbing size, length and
fixtures.

Softener Sanitation Procedure

A. Regenerate both tanks of the water conditioning unit with sodium chloride (salt). Use a clean grade of salt
appropriate for use with water treatment equipment. Do NOT use rock salt.
B. Mix 1 fluid ounce of unscented household bleach in 4 gallons of clean/soft water. This should make a 100
ppm solution. More may be required for large units.
C. Disconnect the brine line and put the 3/8 tube into the container holding the bleach mixture from the step
above.
D. Put the unit into brine draw on one tank.
E. Draw the mixture until a strong bleach odor is detected (smelled or tested) in the drain line. This procedure
should produce approximately 20 ppm in the mixed solution.
F. Switch quickly to the other tank and repeat the procedure.
G. Advance the control disc to the service position and allow the unit to stand for 30-60 minutes. The colder
the water, the longer the stand time should be.
H. Reconnect the brine line (3/8 tube) to the brine tank and backwash each tank of the softener two times.
14. Start-up of the Kinetico models using a Kinetico By-pass Valve and containing media other than, or in addition
to, resin:
The following start-up procedure must be followed to prevent air locking of the carbon and possible damage
to the upper distributor. With the inlet valve turned off, turn the Kinetico By-pass Valve handle until the
indicator is in the service position. The black dot on the control disc should be in the service position at
either 6 or 12 o'clock. Open a cold water tap wide open downstream of the equipment. Open the inlet valve
slowly, allowing water to fill the tanks at approximately 1 gpm. This will take about 10 minutes depending on
the model being installed. Continue purging air from the unit at 1 gpm, using the downstream tap for another
5 to 10 minutes. Once the purging procedure is complete, open the inlet valve completely and advance the
control disc to backwash. Allow the backwash to finish on its own. Advance the control disc to the next
backwash cycle and allow it to finish the backwash on its own. Check flow through the unit downstream at
the cold water tap already open. Repeat the backwashing steps if the drain water is not clear or there is air
remaining in the unit. Close the cold water tap.
Start-up of the Kinetico models not using a Kinetico By-pass Valve and containing media other than, or in
addition to, resin:
