Whole-Body Toxicity
76
An unconscious state divers experience when the brain be-
comes deprived of oxygen. SWB frequently happens with-
out warning, causing death by subsequent drowning.
Unconsciousness due to gradual oxygen depletion caused
by holding one's breath too long. It can occur anywhere,
particularly at the surface, and is not associated with depth
or pressure changes. It commonly occurs in swimming
pools at the surface or during long underwater endurance
swims.
Abbreviation for surface interval time.
Elapsed time between surfacing from a dive and beginning
a descent for the subsequent repetitive dive.
Another form of oxygen toxicity, which is caused by pro-
longed exposure to high oxygen partial pressures. The most
common symptoms are irritation in the lungs, a burning
sensation in the chest, coughing and reduction of the vital
capacity. Also called Pulmonary Oxygen Toxicity.
