9 11 STEERING

For the frequency of this intervention
see chapter 13

Checks

Gently turn the steering wheel back and forth.
There must be no mechanical play in the steering
chains.

Adjustment (37)

Adjust the steering chains if required as follows:
1 Put the machine in the straight-ahead posi-
tion.
2 Adjust the steering chains by means of the
two nuts, located under the central point
(37:A).
3 Adjust both nuts by the same amount until
there is no play.
4 Test drive the machine, moving it forward in
a straight line and checking that the steering
wheel is not off centre.
5 If the steering wheel is off centre, slacken
one nut and tighten the other.
Do not over tension the steering chains
This would make the steering too stiff
and increase wear on the chains

9 12 BATTERY

For the type of battery installed on the machine,
please refer to "0 TECHNICAL DATA TABLE"
CAUTION! Battery acid is corrosive and
contact with it is harmful
Handle the battery with care taking care
not to let acid leak out
Acid can cause serious injuries if it co-
mes into contact with eyes or skin If
any part of the body comes into contact
with acid, rinse immediately with co-
pious amounts of water and seek medi-
cal attention immediately
The battery fluid does not need checking or
topping up.
The only maintenance operation required is char-
ging, for example after extended storage.
The battery can be charged:
• by the engine,
• by a battery charger.

Charging by the engine

This method is only an option if there is still
enough charge in the battery to be able to start the
engine.
• If the battery is new, connect the relative leads.
• Take the machine outside.
• Start the engine by following the instructions
provided in this manual.
• Leave the engine running continuously for 45
minutes (the time needed to fully charge the
battery).
• Turn off the engine.

Charging with a battery charger

Use a constant voltage battery charger
Use of a standard charger may damage
the battery For further information, ple-
ase contact your dealer
Before connecting the battery charger,
disconnect the battery from the electri-
cal system

Disassembly/assembly

The battery is housed under the bonnet.
During removal/installation of the battery, connect
and disconnect the leads as follows:
• During removal. First disconnect the black lead
from the battery's negative terminal (-). Then
disconnect the red lead from the battery's positive
terminal (+).
• During installation. First connect the red lead to
the battery's positive terminal (+). Then connect
the black lead to the battery's negative terminal (-).
If the leads are disconnected/con-
nected in the wrong order, there is a
risk of a short-circuit and damage to the
battery
If the leads are interchanged, the alter-
nator and the battery may be damaged
Tighten the leads securely Loose leads
are a fire risk.
Never start the engine with the battery
disconnected There is a risk of serious
damage to the alternator and the elec-
trical system
